Saladin worked three shutout innings, allowing just one hit while walking two. He did not let the game get away. He did not let Northwest Arkansas stretch the lead. He gave the Cardinals room to breathe.That matters.A lot.In the minor leagues, the attention usually goes to the starter who piles up strikeouts or the closer who records the final out. But there are games when the most important pitching performance comes in the middle innings. Sunday was one of those games.Springfield trailed 6-3 before scoring the final four runs of the game. That comeback does not happen without the bullpen putting up zeroes.Saladin started that work.Michael Watson, Nelfy Ynfante and Andrew Schultz finished it, combining for 3.1 more scoreless innings and allowing just one hit. Together, Springfield’s bullpen gave the offense enough time to climb back into the game.Then Cho ended it.On the second pitch of the bottom of the ninth inning, Cho launched a walk-off solo home run, giving Springfield a 7-6 victory and another strong statement to open the second half.But before the walk-off, there had to be a shutdown.That was Saladin.His three scoreless innings turned a game that was slipping away into a game Springfield could still win. He stabilized the middle of the game, protected the bullpen chain and helped give the Cardinals one more chance at the plate.That is winning baseball.It does not always come with the loudest box score.But it shows up where it counts.Springfield improved to 5-1 to open the second half and took five of six from Northwest Arkansas. The Cardinal Chronicle Farm Report St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals’ full-season affiliates split Sunday’s schedule, going 2-2 across the system.Memphis continued to stumble in Jacksonville, Springfield walked off Northwest Arkansas, Peoria wasted a big day from Cade McGee, and Palm Beach stayed hot by taking another game from Bradenton.It was not a clean day across the board.But there were still individual performances worth noting.Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A) 48-33 overall 1-5 second half, third place, International League WestJacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 4, Memphis Redbirds 1Memphis closed its six-game road trip with a 4-1 loss to Jacksonville at VyStar Ballpark.The Redbirds struck first when Nolan Gorman hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning. It was Gorman’s second home run during his first week back at Triple-A this season.That was about all the Memphis offense could find.Colton Ledbetter had the lone multi-hit game for the Redbirds, going 2-for-3, but Memphis could not turn traffic into enough pressure.Jacksonville answered in the second inning and took control in the third. Agustín Ramírez delivered the big swing, a three-run home run off Brycen Mautz that turned a 1-1 game into a 4-1 Jacksonville lead.Mautz took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits over five innings. He walked five and struck out three.There were still a couple of bullpen notes worth filing away. Ryan Fernandez, working on an MLB rehab assignment, threw a perfect sixth inning with a strikeout. Luis Gastelum also continued his strong run, extending his scoreless appearance streak to 15 games.But the story was simple.One swing gave Memphis an early lead.One bigger swing gave Jacksonville the game.Springfield Cardinals (Double-A) 36-38 overall 5-1 second half, first place, Texas League NorthSpringfield Cardinals 7, Northwest Arkansas Naturals 6Springfield made Sunday’s loudest statement in the system.The Cardinals beat Northwest Arkansas 7-6 on a walk-off solo home run from Won-Bin Cho in the bottom of the ninth inning at Route 66 Stadium.That is a good way to end a series.Springfield took five of six from the Naturals and moved to 5-1 to open the second half. More importantly, the Cardinals showed some backbone. They trailed 6-3 before scoring the final four runs of the game.The bullpen made the comeback possible.Darlin Saladin threw three scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit and walking two. Michael Watson, Nelfy Ynfante and Andrew Schultz followed by combining for 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.That is how a game gets rescued.Jesús Báez also delivered a big swing, hitting his second home run since reaching Double-A. The ball left the bat at 108 mph.But the final swing belonged to Cho.On the second pitch of the ninth inning, Cho sent one out and sent Springfield home a winner. It was Springfield’s second walk-off home run of the series and third walk-off home run of the season.That is a winning clubhouse right now.Peoria Chiefs (High-A) 36-38 overall 4-4 second half, fifth place, Midwest League WestBeloit Sky Carp 6, Peoria Chiefs 5Cade McGee did everything he could.It still was not enough.Peoria lost 6-5 to Beloit on Sunday afternoon at ABC Supply Stadium despite a monster day from McGee, who went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs.McGee drove in Peoria’s first run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning. He then hit a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 3-0 Chiefs. In the sixth, he struck again with a solo home run, pushing Peoria back ahead 4-2.That is a full day’s work by the sixth inning.He was not done.After Beloit rallied, McGee came up again in the eighth and delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-5. But Peoria left two runners on base in the inning and could not finish the comeback.Jacob Odle gave the Chiefs another strikeout-heavy start. He struck out eight batters over six innings, the second consecutive start in which he reached eight strikeouts. Odle was sharp early, cruising through four scoreless innings before Beloit began to square up mistakes.The Sky Carp hit three home runs, including a two-run shot by Brandon Compton in the fifth, a two-run homer by Jesus Hernandez in the sixth and a two-run homer by Carter Johnson in the seventh.That was the difference.Peoria had the best individual hitter on the field.Beloit had the bigger late swings.Palm Beach Cardinals (Single-A) 40-35 overall 7-2 second half, first place, Florida State League EastPalm Beach Cardinals 8, Bradenton Marauders 3Palm Beach bounced back Sunday with an 8-3 win over Bradenton at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.Bradenton scored first on a solo home run by Richard Ramirez in the second inning, but Palm Beach answered in the bottom half and took control with a four-run fourth.That was the inning that changed the game.After Bradenton cut the deficit to 5-2 in the fifth and 5-3 in the sixth, Palm Beach put the game away late. The Cardinals scored two more runs in the seventh and added another in the eighth to finish off the win.Kaden Echeman picked up the victory in relief, allowing one run on three hits over 1.2 innings. He walked one and struck out two.Palm Beach improved to 7-2 in the second half and 40-35 overall. The Cardinals also continued their strong season-long work against Bradenton, taking five of six in the series and staying on top of the Florida State League East.This is what a good Single-A club does.It does not let one rough night turn into two.Player of the Day Cade McGee, Peoria ChiefsThis one was not complicated.Cade McGee went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs in Peoria’s 6-5 loss to Beloit.The Chiefs did not win the game, but McGee had the best offensive performance in the Cardinals’ system Sunday. He drove in every Peoria run and gave the Chiefs a chance to steal a game that otherwise could have slipped away earlier.Two homers.Five RBIs.A three-hit day.That earns the headline.Pitcher of the Day Darlin Saladin, Springfield CardinalsDarlin Saladin gets the honor for stabilizing Springfield’s comeback win.The Cardinals were in trouble early, but Saladin gave them three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit while walking two. The Cardinal Chronicle Marlins Take Series as Cardinals Drop Second Straight, 5-1 St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals needed a win Saturday night.They did not get one.After being shut out in the series opener Friday, the Cardinals again struggled to create offense and fell to the Miami Marlins, 5-1, at Busch Stadium. The loss gave Miami the first two games of the three-game set and left St. Louis trying to avoid a sweep in Sunday’s finale.This was not the same kind of loss as Friday night’s 4-0 shutout, when Michael McGreevy gave the Cardinals six scoreless innings and the offense never showed up.This one looked different.The result felt the same.Miami put steady pressure on Andre Pallante from the first inning, kept adding on, and never allowed the Cardinals to turn the game into a real late-inning threat. St. Louis had seven hits, loaded the bases once, and had traffic in multiple innings, but the Cardinals could not land the big swing.That has become the problem.The Marlins struck quickly in the first. Xavier Edwards struck out to open the game, but Otto Lopez followed with a triple to right field. Kyle Stowers then singled to right, scoring Lopez and giving Miami a 1-0 lead before the Cardinals came to bat.Pallante avoided further damage when Heriberto Hernández grounded into a double play, but the writing was on the wall. Miami was aggressive, and the Cardinals were immediately playing from behind.St. Louis went quietly in the bottom of the first, then had a chance to answer in the second when Lars Nootbaar worked a walk. But Jordan Walker struck out, Masyn Winn flied out, and Bryan Torres lined out to right to end the inning. Miami added another run in the third. Joe Mack singled, Xavier Edwards reached on a bunt single, and after Lopez grounded into a double play, Stowers came through again with a ground-ball single to center. Mack scored, and the Marlins led 2-0.The Cardinals had their first real chance in the bottom half.Jimmy Crooks and Nathan Church both struck out to open the inning, but JJ Wetherholt singled to left, Iván Herrera singled to center, and Alec Burleson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The tying run was in scoring position. Walker was at the plate. Busch Stadium had a chance to get back into the game. Walker struck out swinging.The Cardinals had loaded the bases and came away with nothing. That was the first big missed opportunity.Miami made it hurt in the fourth.Jakob Marsee doubled to right field, and after Griffin Conine moved him to third, Javier Sanoja singled to right, scoring Marsee to make it 3-0. Sanoja then stole second and scored when Edwards singled to left. In a span of a few hitters, the Marlins had stretched the lead to 4-0 and put the Cardinals in a deeper hole. Pallante was not awful, but he was not sharp enough either.He gave St. Louis 6 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits, walking one and striking out four. He threw 98 pitches and did not give up a home run, but Miami kept stringing together contact. The Marlins did not need one huge swing. They built their offense the hard way — singles, doubles, pressure and enough timely contact to keep the Cardinals chasing.That kind of offense can wear down a starter.It wore down Pallante.The Cardinals finally broke through in the sixth. Walker walked, Nootbaar singled to center, and Winn followed with a single to right, scoring Walker and cutting the deficit to 4-1.For a brief moment, there was a little life.But José Fermín grounded into a double play, with Nootbaar cut down at third, and Crooks grounded out to end the inning. The Cardinals had their first run, but again, they could not extend the threat.Miami answered in the seventh.Sanoja singled with one out, and Edwards doubled to left. Pallante got Joe Mack to bounce into a double play earlier in the inning, but after Edwards’ double, Matt Svanson entered and Otto Lopez singled to right, scoring Edwards and making it 5-1.That run meant more for the game's momentum than for the score. Whenever the Cardinals threatened to rally, Miami immediately responded. Each time St. Louis put runners on base, the threat fizzled out. The Marlins executed with more precision, leaving the Cardinals chasing all evening.The final offensive line tells most of the story.Miami scored five runs on 12 hits. Edwards went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Lopez went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. Stowers went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk. Sanoja added two hits, a run, an RBI and a stolen base.That is production up and down the order.The Cardinals scored one run on seven hits. Wetherholt had two hits. Nootbaar had two hits and a walk. Herrera singled. Walker singled and walked, but also struck out twice and left runners aboard. Winn drove in the only St. Louis run. Burleson was hit by a pitch but went hitless. Crooks and Church combined to go hitless with four strikeouts.It was not enough.Again.Ryan Gusto did not go deep for Miami, but he kept the Cardinals off the board through 3 1/3 innings. John King, Lake Bachar and Anthony Bender handled the rest, with Bachar allowing the only Cardinals run and Bender closing the door.The Marlins bullpen did what the Cardinals’ offense could not overcome.For St. Louis, Justin Bruihl worked a clean inning late, striking out one, but by then the game had already settled into Miami’s control. Svanson allowed the inherited run to score in the seventh, and the Cardinals never got closer than three runs after the sixth inning.This loss drops the Cardinals into a familiar and frustrating place.They are getting enough starting pitching some nights to stay competitive. They are getting scattered hits. They are getting occasional traffic. But the offense is not turning chances into enough runs, and the margins are getting thinner by the day.Friday night, the Cardinals were held to three hits and no runs.Saturday night, they had seven hits but only one run.That is two games, one run total, at home, against a Marlins club that came into St. Louis playing confident baseball and has looked like the sharper team through two nights.The Cardinals' offense has to start hitting.They have to cash in the bases-loaded chances. They have to stop letting opposing clubs score first and then control the game. They have to give their pitchers a margin bigger than a needle’s eye.Saturday’s game was not a blowout, but it was decisive enough.Miami scored early, added on, answered when St. Louis finally pushed across a run, and took care of the late innings. The Cardinals had chances but lacked execution.That is how a series gets lost.The Cardinals will try to salvage the finale on Sunday. At this point, it is less about style and more about stopping the slide before a bad homestand turns into something heavier.The Marlins have already taken the series.The Cardinals need to make sure they do not leave with everything. The Cardinal Chronicle Herrea Has Put in the Work, But the Running Game Still Has the Final Word&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurIván Herrera has done what the Cardinals asked him to do.He showed up this spring, willing to work. He spent time around Yadier Molina. He listened. He took instruction. He committed to the daily grind of becoming more than a bat-first catcher. By all accounts, Herrera has tried to improve the mental side of the position, the game-calling responsibilities, the leadership piece, and the pitch-to-pitch concentration that separated Molina from most catchers of his generation.That matters.Molina’s old message was simple: Catch all 100 pitches. Not 97. Not 98. All 100. One missed block, one wrong target, one lazy receive, one poor throw can change a game.Herrera appears to understand that better now than he did earlier in his career. There are signs of growth. He looks more comfortable handling pitchers. He has worked with Michael McGreevy and Andre Pallante, and the Cardinals have clearly trusted him with more responsibility behind the plate than they did a year ago, when he was used more often as a designated hitter because of injury, roster fit, and defensive concerns.That is the positive side of the story.The other side is just as real.For all the work, all the effort, and all the spring instruction, Herrera still has not become the kind of catcher who controls the running game. That is not an insult. That is not piling on. That is simply where the weakness still shows.The arm does not scare runners. The exchange is not quick enough to cover for average throws. The pop time is not a weapon. And in today’s game, with larger bases, limited disengagements, and more aggressive baserunning, a catcher who does not deter runners creates pressure on the entire defense.That is the issue with Herrera behind the plate.It is not that he cannot hit. He can hit.It is not that he does not care. He clearly does.It is not that Molina failed him. Molina can teach preparation, focus, positioning, game awareness, staff handling, and the little things that turn a catcher into a leader. But Molina cannot lend Herrera his arm, his footwork, or his release in the ninth inning with a runner taking off.At some point, the instruction has to meet the tools.That is where the Cardinals’ catching picture gets complicated.Herrera’s bat belongs in the lineup. His offensive value is real enough that St. Louis has to find ways to keep him involved. He controls the strike zone, gets on base, has enough power to matter, and gives the Cardinals a right-handed bat with legitimate run-producing value.But catching is not only about the bat.The Cardinals know that better than almost any organization in baseball. This franchise spent nearly two decades watching Molina change games without swinging. He shut down running games before they started. Teams stopped testing him. Pitchers trusted him. Infielders played with confidence because they knew not every single or walk was about to become a runner in scoring position.That is the standard in St. Louis.It may not be fair to compare Herrera to Molina. Almost nobody measures up to that. But it is fair to ask whether Herrera can be good enough defensively to catch regularly for a team trying to win meaningful games.Right now, the answer remains unsettled.Herrera has improved in some areas. He deserves credit for that. But controlling the running game remains the glaring hole. Opponents are not treating him like a catcher they need to respect. They are treating him like a catcher they can test.That matters in April. It matters more in September. It matters even more in October.The Cardinals do not need Herrera to become the next Yadier Molina. That player is not walking back through the clubhouse door with a chest protector on in our lifetime.But they do need Herrera to become dependable enough that his bat does not come with a defensive tax every time a runner reaches first base.That is the line the Cardinals have to walk.Herrera’s work with Molina is a good story. It shows maturity. It shows buy-in. It shows a young catcher trying to grow into a more complete player.But the final answer will not come from spring drills, quotes, or good intentions. It will come when a runner breaks for second, the throw has to be there, and the Cardinals need an out.Until Herrera starts winning those moments, the question remains the same: Can he catch enough to let the bat play, or is his best long-term value still tied to the bat-first role the Cardinals were already leaning toward? Herrera Has Put in the Work, But the Running Game Still Has the Final Word

The Cardinal Chronicle MiLB Pitcher of the Day: Mason Molina and the Springfield Pitching Staff St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe Springfield pitching staff gets the honor.Mason Molina gets the headline.Molina and the Cardinals’ staff are The Cardinal Chronicle’s Minor League Pitcher of the Day after Springfield shut out the Northwest Arkansas Naturals 4-0 on Saturday night at Route 66 Stadium.This was the cleanest pitching performance in the Cardinals’ full-season system.Springfield put nine zeroes on the board and controlled the game from the mound. It was a staff shutout, and that deserves recognition. But the reason the night belonged to Springfield started with Molina.The left-hander was outstanding.Molina worked 6.2 scoreless innings, allowing five hits while walking two and striking out six. He gave Springfield length, control and the kind of steady presence that takes pressure off everyone else.That is a real start.Not a flash start.Not a three-inning tease.A real start.Molina carried the game into the seventh inning and gave the Cardinals every chance to play from in front. Springfield’s offense gave him enough support, scoring once in the fourth, once in the sixth and twice in the eighth, but the pitching staff made those runs feel larger than they were.That is what good pitching does.It changes the math of the game.Four runs become plenty when the starter is throwing up zeroes and the bullpen finishes the job.Molina did not just miss bats. He worked deep. He kept Northwest Arkansas off the board. He gave Springfield a tone-setter after the Cardinals had already swept Friday’s doubleheader.That matters.This was not just one good night in isolation. Springfield had lost the series opener Tuesday, then answered with a 7-1 win Wednesday, a doubleheader sweep Friday, and a shutout Saturday. That is four straight wins, and Molina helped turn Saturday into the most complete win of the run.The staff honor still matters here.A shutout is never one man alone unless he finishes all nine. The bullpen had to protect it. The defense had to make plays. The club had to finish the job.But Molina earned the center of the story.He set the whole thing up.Peoria also had good pitching work Saturday. Leonel Sequera settled in after early trouble and kept the Chiefs close through 5.1 innings in a 4-3 win at Beloit. José Davila and Dominic Freeberger added scoreless relief, and Bobby Olsen struck out two in the ninth to close it.But Springfield had the shutout.And Molina gave the Cardinals 6.2 scoreless innings to make it possible.That gets the nod.Old School TakeThere is still nothing better than a starter who takes the ball and gives his club real length.Mason Molina did that Saturday.6.2 innings.No runs.Six strikeouts.A shutout win.The Springfield pitching staff deserves the honor because nine zeroes belong to the whole group.But Molina was the reason the night had its shape.He gave Springfield control of the game.He gave the bullpen a clean path.He gave the Cardinals another win.That is why Mason Molina and the Springfield pitching staff are The Cardinal Chronicle Minor League Pitcher of the Day. The Cardinal Chronicle Minor League Player of the Day: José Suárez St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurJosé Suárez was in the middle of Peoria’s win from the first pitch to the final rally.Suárez is The Cardinal Chronicle’s Minor League Player of the Day after helping lead the Chiefs to a 4-3 comeback win over the Beloit Sky Carp on Saturday night at ABC Supply Stadium.This was not a loud offensive night across the board.It was a game Peoria had to grind out.That is where Suárez made the difference.He opened the game by attacking the first pitch and driving it off the top of the right-field wall for a double. Two batters later, Jalin Flores brought him home with a sacrifice fly, giving Peoria a 1-0 lead.That was the first spark.Beloit answered with a run in the second and two more in the third, taking a 3-1 lead. Peoria’s offense had chances, but the Chiefs had to keep working to stay close.Suárez was part of that, too.In the fifth inning, Christian Martin singled, Suárez followed with another hit, and Cade McGee drove in a run to cut the deficit to 3-2. Peoria had a chance for more in the inning, but stranded runners at second and third.That could have been the missed opportunity that decided the game.Instead, Suárez helped make sure it was not.With Peoria still trailing by one in the ninth, Jose Cordoba led off with a single. Suárez later singled to center, putting runners at the corners with one out.Then the Chiefs put pressure on Beloit.With McGee at the plate, Suárez broke for second base.
