He walked one and struck out three, taking the loss in one of the toughest-luck pitching performances of the Cardinals’ minor league season.That is baseball.Sometimes a pitcher does his job and still takes the loss.Hansen did his job.He gave Memphis length. He limited traffic. He kept Jacksonville from putting together rallies. He made one unearned run the difference in the game.That is a winning pitching line on almost any night.It also came one day after Hansen was highlighted in The Cardinal Chronicle’s Friday Who’s Hot, Who’s Not report in the Who’s Not section.That is what made this response stand out.Baseball has a way of humbling everyone, but it also gives players a chance to answer quickly. Hansen did exactly that. He did not let the recent struggles carry into another start. He went back to the mound, attacked the strike zone and gave Memphis six strong innings.That matters.Not because one start erases everything.It does not.But one start can change the direction of a pitcher’s week. It can rebuild confidence. It can remind everyone what the left-hander is capable of when he is working ahead and keeping hitters from squaring him up.Memphis out-hit Jacksonville 3-2, but the Redbirds could not push across a run. Palm Beach kept its second-half surge going with a 12-10 comeback win over Bradenton. Memphis wasted a strong start from Pete Hansen in a 1-0 loss at Jacksonville, while Peoria fell 6-1 at Beloit after a late Sky Carp rally.It was a night of contrasts.Memphis had the pitching, but not the offense.Springfield had offense everywhere.Peoria stayed scoreless with Beloit for six innings, then let the game get away.Palm Beach just kept swinging.Memphis Redbirds Record: 48-31 overall, International League West Second Half: 1-3 Standings: International League West; 2026 International League First Half Champions Result: Jacksonville 1, Memphis 0Memphis wasted a gem Friday night.The Redbirds lost 1-0 to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp at VyStar Ballpark, dropping their third straight game and tying their longest losing streak of the season.This one was all about missed opportunity.Memphis out-hit Jacksonville 3-2, but never found the one swing it needed. It was the kind of doubleheader opener that matters because it keeps the day from turning into a bullpen grind with pressure carried into game two.The Cardinals took care of that.Then they ran away with the second game.Springfield scored two runs in the first inning, five more in the second and seven in the fifth to turn the nightcap into a 14-2 rout.That is how you finish a doubleheader.Deniel Ortiz provided one of the biggest swings of the night, launching a three-run homer with Travis Honeyman and Rainiel Rodriguez aboard. Rainiel Rodriguez also had an RBI double, continuing to show why his bat remains one of the most important in the system.The Cardinals had traffic all night in the second game. Seven strikeouts in 3.2 innings tells you the stuff was playing.Springfield’s offense was the headline, but this was a complete doubleheader response.A close win in game one.A blowout in game two.A sweep after a rainout.That is a good day.Peoria Chiefs Record: 35-37 overall, Midwest League West Second Half: 3-3 Standings: Midwest League West Result: Beloit 6, Peoria 1Peoria was locked in a scoreless game for six innings.Then the seventh inning changed everything.The Chiefs lost 6-1 to the Beloit Sky Carp on Friday night at ABC Supply Stadium, falling back to .500 in the second half.Tanner Franklin had to work through trouble early, but he did not break.Franklin walked three batters in the first inning and still stranded the bases loaded. He finished with 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while working around four walks.That was not the cleanest line, but it was effective.Peoria’s offense could not do anything early against Beloit starter Nate Payne, who threw six shutout innings, allowed two hits and struck out seven.The Chiefs had their chance in Payne’s final inning.Anyelo Encarnación singled, Jose Cordoba walked, and Peoria had two runners on with one out. Payne struck out the next two hitters and kept the game scoreless.That missed chance mattered.Beloit finally broke through in the seventh against the Peoria bullpen. Nolan Sparks entered with seven consecutive scoreless innings behind him, but the Sky Carp got to him for five runs on three hits. Abrahan Ramirez and Chase Jaworsky each delivered two-run singles in the inning.That was the game.Peoria avoided the shutout in the eighth when José Suárez doubled home a run, but the Chiefs stranded two runners in scoring position to end the inning.That summed up the night.Some chances.Not enough finish.Peoria’s pitching held Beloit down for six innings, but the offense never gave the staff a lead to protect.Palm Beach Cardinals Record: 39-34 overall, Florida State League East Second Half: 6-1 Standings: 1st place, Florida State League East Result: Palm Beach 12, Bradenton 10Palm Beach keeps finding ways to beat Bradenton.The Cardinals came from behind again Friday night, beating the Marauders 12-10 at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium to clinch the series and improve to 10-0 against Bradenton this season.This one was not clean.It was not comfortable.But it was another Palm Beach win.The Cardinals scored first in the bottom of the first inning when Ryan Weingartner singled home Brayden Smith to make it 1-0.Then the game turned hard in Bradenton’s direction.The Marauders scored six runs in the second inning against Andrew Dutkanych IV, who lasted just 1.2 innings and was charged with six earned runs. Bradenton pushed the lead to 7-2 in the third.Palm Beach had a long climb.The Cardinals started with a Heriberto Caraballo solo home run in the second inning, his fourth of the season. Then, with Palm Beach still down 7-2 in the sixth, Trevor Haskins delivered again.Haskins hit a two-run home run to left field, his third homer in two nights, cutting the deficit to 7-4.That swing mattered.It did not finish the comeback, but it changed the inning and brought Palm Beach back into the game.The Cardinals kept coming in the seventh.Yairo Padilla and Ryan Mitchell opened the inning with back-to-back doubles. Ian Petrutz added an RBI single. Seven Cardinals had at least two hits. The Cardinal Chronicle Minor League Player of the Day: Trevor Haskins St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurTrevor Haskins gave Palm Beach power when it needed it.Then he gave the Cardinals some breathing room when the game started tightening up.Haskins is The Cardinal Chronicle’s Minor League Player of the Day after hitting two home runs in Palm Beach’s 8-5 win over the Bradenton Marauders on Thursday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.Both swings mattered.His first home run came in the fourth inning, an opposite-field solo shot that stretched Palm Beach’s lead to 6-2. At that point, the Cardinals had already answered an early Bradenton lead and were starting to take control of the game.Haskins helped push it further in their direction.The second home run may have been even more important.Bradenton had scored in the seventh and added two more runs in the eighth, cutting Palm Beach’s lead to 7-5. The game was no longer comfortable. The Marauders had momentum, and the Cardinals needed an answer before handing the game to the bullpen in the ninth.Haskins supplied it.In the bottom of the eighth, he hit his second solo home run of the night, pushing Palm Beach’s lead back to three runs and giving the Cardinals the insurance run they needed.That is not empty power.That is a hitter responding to the moment.Palm Beach went on to close out the 8-5 win, improving to 5-1 in the second half and staying unbeaten against Bradenton this season.Haskins finished with two home runs and two RBIs, giving him five home runs on the season. The Cardinal Chronicle Minor League Pitcher of the Day: Ty Van Dyke St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurTy Van Dyke did not start the shutout.He finished it.Van Dyke is The Cardinal Chronicle’s Minor League Pitcher of the Day after throwing five hitless innings in Peoria’s 2-0 win over the Beloit Sky Carp on Thursday night at ABC Supply Stadium.This was not a game with much room for error.Peoria scored one run in the second inning and one more in the fifth. That was it. The Chiefs finished with five hits, but the pitching staff made two runs stand up by keeping Beloit off the board all night.Nate Dohm started it with three scoreless innings.Victor Santos bridged it with a scoreless fourth.Then Van Dyke took over and carried the game the rest of the way.The right-hander worked five innings, did not allow a hit, walked three and struck out five. He had to pitch through some traffic, but he never let Beloit turn it into damage.That is what made the outing stand out.This was not just clean relief work in a comfortable game. This was five innings of shutout baseball in a tight road win where every pitch still mattered. One swing could have changed the game. Van Dyke never gave Beloit that swing.Peoria took a 1-0 lead in the second when Luis Pino scored on a sacrifice fly from Sammy Hernandez. The Chiefs added another run in the fifth when Jose Cordoba doubled and Jack Gurevitch followed with an RBI single to center.That gave Peoria a 2-0 lead.Van Dyke protected it.He entered after Santos and gave the Chiefs length, control of the game and a finishing hand. He did not allow a hit across the final five innings and struck out five to earn his second High-A win.For a pitching staff, that is how a shutout is supposed to look.Dohm set the tone.Santos kept it clean.Van Dyke brought it home.There were other strong pitching notes in the Cardinals’ system Thursday night. Dohm deserves mention for opening the game with three scoreless innings and four strikeouts. Jack Martinez struck out seven over 3.2 innings for Palm Beach in the Cardinals’ 8-5 win over Bradenton. Luis Gastelum also threw a scoreless inning with two strikeouts for Memphis.But Van Dyke had the best pitching line of the day.Five innings.No hits.No runs.Five strikeouts.A road shutout win.That earns the honor.The Cardinals’ system has had several strong pitching performances this week, but Van Dyke’s outing was different because of how much responsibility he carried. He was not asked to get three outs. He was asked to finish the game, protect a narrow lead and make sure Beloit never found a way back into it.He did all three.That is the value of a pitcher who can give a club real length after the starter exits. It saves the bullpen. It controls the pace of the game. It takes pressure off the offense. Palm Beach kept rolling in the Florida State League, beating Bradenton 8-5 behind two home runs from Trevor Haskins and a strong offensive night from Ian Petrutz.Memphis lost 10-4 at Jacksonville despite three home runs, including Nolan Gorman’s first Triple-A homer of the season. Cordoba doubled and scored. Gurevitch singled and drove in a run. Pino singled, walked and scored. Cameron Nickens singled and walked.The Chiefs also used their legs, with Nickens, Gurevitch and Hernandez each stealing a base.But this game belonged to the pitching staff.Two hits allowed.No runs.Nine combined strikeouts.That is how you win on the road.Palm Beach Cardinals Record: 38-34 overall, Florida State League East Second Half: 5-1 Standings: 1st place, Florida State League East Result: Palm Beach 8, Bradenton 5Palm Beach stayed hot Thursday night.The Cardinals beat the Bradenton Marauders 8-5 at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium, improving to 5-1 in the second half and 9-0 against Bradenton this season.Bradenton scored first on a solo home run by Eddie Rynders in the second inning, but Palm Beach answered immediately.Ian Petrutz tied the game in the bottom half with a solo home run to center field, his second homer of his rehab assignment with Palm Beach.Bradenton moved back in front 2-1 in the third, but Palm Beach responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.Ryan Weingartner doubled home the tying run. A balk brought in another run to give Palm Beach the lead. Yordalin Peña added an RBI double, and Petrutz followed with another RBI double to make it 5-2.The Cardinals kept adding on.Trevor Haskins hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, his fifth of the season, to stretch the lead to 6-2. In the sixth, Chase Heath singled, stole second, advanced to third and scored on a Heriberto Caraballo single.Bradenton made it interesting late, scoring in the seventh and adding two more in the eighth to cut Palm Beach’s lead to 7-5.Haskins answered with his second solo home run of the game in the bottom of the eighth, giving Palm Beach an insurance run and pushing the lead back to three.Dylan Driessen recorded the final four outs for his third save, striking out two.Jack Martinez started for Palm Beach and struck out seven over 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Jesús García earned the win out of the bullpen, allowing one run over 2.2 innings.Palm Beach’s offense finished with 11 hits.Haskins homered twice. Petrutz went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs. Caraballo had three singles and an RBI. That swing gave Palm Beach some breathing room and helped close out another win over the Marauders.Haskins finished with two solo home runs, giving him five on the season.Ian Petrutz deserves strong mention after going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs for Palm Beach. Jeremy Rivas also deserves mention after hitting his first career Triple-A home run for Memphis. Nolan Gorman and Bligh Madris also homered for the Redbirds.But Haskins had the best power night in the system.Two home runs.A late insurance blast.A Palm Beach win.That earns the honor.Pitcher of the Day Ty Van Dyke, Peoria ChiefsTy Van Dyke is The Cardinal Chronicle’s Pitcher of the Day after throwing five hitless innings in Peoria’s 2-0 win over Beloit.Van Dyke entered after Nate Dohm and Victor Santos had already started the shutout, then carried it the rest of the way.He worked five innings, did not allow a hit, walked three and struck out five. That is a strong long-relief line in any setting, but it mattered even more in a tight 2-0 game on the road.Peoria did not have much margin for error.Van Dyke gave Beloit none.Nate Dohm deserves strong mention after opening the game with three scoreless innings and four strikeouts. Jack Martinez also deserves mention after striking out seven over 3.2 innings for Palm Beach.But Van Dyke finished the shutout.Five hitless innings.Five strikeouts.A road win.That gets the nod.Old School TakePeoria gave us the cleanest baseball of the night.Two runs is not much.But when your pitching staff gives up two hits and throws a shutout, two runs are enough.Nate Dohm started it.Victor Santos bridged it.Ty Van Dyke finished it.That is how a pitching staff wins a game.Palm Beach kept rolling, too. The Cardinals are 5-1 in the second half and still have not lost to Bradenton this season. The Cardinal Chronicle Cardinals Host Marlins Looking to Regain Footing After Rainout Reset St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe Cardinals did not get a chance to salvage a split against Arizona on Thursday night.The weather made sure of that.After the series finale against the Diamondbacks was postponed because of inclement weather, St. Louis turns the page and opens a three-game weekend series against the Miami Marlins on Friday night at Busch Stadium. What was supposed to be Michael McGreevy’s turn against Arizona now slides into the Marlins series, giving the Cardinals a slightly different rotation look as they try to steady themselves after dropping back-to-back games earlier in the week.That is not the worst thing in the world.The Cardinals needed a reset. They got one, even if it came with a tarp.St. Louis enters the series at 42-36 after taking the opener from Arizona, then losing the next two games before Thursday’s finale was washed away and pushed to July 23. The Cardinals remain in the National League Central race, but the last several days have again shown the same truth that has followed this club for most of the season: the offense has enough life to keep them in games, but the pitching staff has to avoid the one inning that wrecks the night.Now Miami comes to town.The Marlins enter the weekend at 42-39, right in the same general National League traffic as the Cardinals. This is not a throwaway opponent, and it is not a series St. Louis can casually drift through. Miami has played itself into relevance, and that makes this weekend more than just the next name on the schedule.Friday’s opener is expected to feature McGreevy for St. Louis against Marlins right-hander Max Meyer. McGreevy had been lined up for Thursday’s postponed game against Arizona, but with the rainout, the Cardinals can roll him into the opener against Miami.That gives St. Louis one of its steadier arms to begin the weekend.McGreevy enters at 3-6 with a 3.35 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP and 53 strikeouts. The record is not pretty, but the performance has often been better than the win-loss line suggests. He is not a power-showcase starter. He wins by pitching — changing speeds, working edges, staying composed and letting the defense do its job.That kind of start would be valuable Friday night.The Cardinals do not need McGreevy to be spectacular. They need him to be stable. They need length. They need strikes. They need him to keep Miami from building early traffic and forcing St. Louis into another bullpen-heavy game. After a week where late innings and crooked innings both caused problems, a clean opening start would go a long way.The challenge is Meyer.Meyer comes in at 8-0 with a 2.80 ERA and 102 strikeouts, giving Miami one of the better arms the Cardinals have seen lately. He has the kind of stuff that can turn impatient at-bats into quick innings, and St. Louis cannot afford to help him by chasing early or trying to do too much. The Cardinals need a mature approach: make him work, get him into the zone, and take advantage when scoring chances appear.There may not be many.That makes the early innings important. If the Cardinals can get traffic before Meyer settles in, they can change the shape of the opener. If they let him cruise, it could become a long night of swinging uphill.The rest of the weekend rotation remains shaped by the postponement. Dustin May and Andre Pallante were both part of the original weekend plan, and with McGreevy sliding into the opener, the Cardinals now have some flexibility in how they line up Saturday and Sunday. May enters at 5-6 with a 4.30 ERA, while Pallante comes in at 9-4 with a 3.59 ERA. Both will matter in this series, whether the club keeps them in order or adjusts around rest, workload and matchups.May remains the wild card in the rotation in the best and most frustrating way. When he is right, he can look like the stabilizer the Cardinals badly need. His power arsenal gives him a different look from the rest of the staff, and St. Louis has already seen what it looks like when he takes over a game. But the Cardinals also need consistency from him, especially as the schedule pushes toward July and the trade-deadline conversation grows louder.Pallante, meanwhile, continues to be one of the more important arms on the staff. His record reflects how often he has kept the Cardinals in position to win. He competes, gets ground balls and gives St. Louis a chance when he controls the strike zone. In a series against a Miami club trying to prove it belongs in the National League race, that kind of start can tilt the weekend.Offensively, the Cardinals need to get back to putting pressure on pitchers early.Jordan Walker remains the main power threat in the middle of the order, entering the series with 18 home runs and 58 RBIs. His season has continued to move from promise into production, and the Cardinals need him to keep driving the baseball if they are going to survive the uneven nights from the pitching staff.Alec Burleson continues to be one of the club’s steadier left-handed bats. Iván Herrera’s on-base ability remains central to the lineup when he is available. JJ Wetherholt keeps giving the Cardinals quality at-bats and top-of-the-order energy. Masyn Winn’s glove and spark matter every night. Blaze Jordan has continued to show that his bat can contribute now, not someday.That young core is still the heartbeat of this season.But this weekend also needs to be about execution, not just youth.The Cardinals cannot keep asking the offense to rescue every game. They need cleaner starts, better bullpen finishing and sharper situational at-bats. They have played themselves into meaningful baseball, but meaningful baseball does not allow much waste. The difference between being in the race and staying in the race is often how well a club handles series like this at home.Miami brings enough danger to make mistakes hurt.The Marlins are not a club the Cardinals can treat like a breather. They have pitching, they have athleticism, and they have played well enough to arrive in St. Louis with their own postseason hopes still breathing. If the Cardinals hand them free baserunners or waste early scoring chances, Miami is capable of turning this series into another missed opportunity.That is the part St. Louis has to avoid.The Cardinals had the Arizona series in a decent place after Monday’s win, then let the next two games get away. The rainout stopped the series, but it did not erase the need for a response. Friday gives them a new opponent, a rested pitching plan and a chance to set the tone for the weekend.The Cardinals are contenders.They are also flawed.Both things can be true.This series against Miami is another chance to show which side of that sentence carries more weight.Get the opener. Make Meyer work. Get length from McGreevy. Let the young bats create traffic.
