The Cardinals Way: Maysn Winn
Maysn Winn earned his first Gold Glove in 2025, and that wasn’t handed to him. It was earned inning by inning, play by play. Few shortstops in the game defend at his level. His range, arm strength, and instincts have already established him as one of the elite defenders at the position. With the arrival of top prospect J.J. Wetherholt in camp — expected to open the season at second base — there is no real threat to Winn’s job at shortstop. The glove secures that. The question isn’t defense. It’s the bat.Winn finished 2025 hitting .253 with nine home runs, 53 RBI and nine stolen bases in 491 at-bats. For a defense-first shortstop, those numbers are workable on the surface. But a deeper look tells a more complicated story. His .310 on-base percentage sits below the league average of roughly .320. An everyday shortstop doesn’t have to carry the offense, but consistent on-base production matters — particularly in a lineup still searching for rhythm. His .363 slugging percentage is more concerning, nearly 60 points below the league average of around .420. That lack of extra-base impact limits his offensive value and keeps pressure on the hitters around him.The result was a .673 OPS in 2025, below the .700 mark that typically represents league-average production. It’s not catastrophic — but it’s not where you want a full-time player to settle.Winn enters 2026 at 24 years old. That’s an age where growth should still be expected. But growth requires adjustment. At times, Winn appeared pull-conscious at the plate, producing routine fly balls instead of line drives. If he can stay through the baseball, use the middle of the field, and refine his approach, there is room for offensive improvement. This is where The Cardinal Way matters. The St. Louis Cardinals have long believed in development over reaction. They do not discard players at the first sign of struggle. They refine them. Winn has already proven he can defend at a championship level. The next step is plate discipline, situational awareness, and incremental growth. The Cardinals do not need him to become a middle-of-the-order slugger. They need him to become a complete shortstop. The glove is already there. The bat is the next test.
Calf Soreness Slows O’Brien’s Spring Build-Up in Jupiter
Spring training is built on routine. Throw, recover, build up, repeat. So when word filters out of Jupiter that the projected closer is dealing with calf soreness, it naturally turns a few heads.Riley O'Brien entered camp as the front-runner to reclaim the ninth inning after quietly stabilizing the bullpen last season. Following the trade-deadline reshuffling, he didn’t blink. Six saves. A 2.06 ERA. More than the numbers, it was the demeanor. He attacked hitters. He worked with pace. He looked like a man comfortable with the ball in the final frame. Now comes a pause.Calf soreness is not an arm issue — and that matters. But for a pitcher, the lower half is the engine. Drive off the rubber, balance through delivery, a firm landing leg — everything begins from the ground up. Even minor tightness can affect timing and command if not handled carefully.Manager Oli Marmol indicated the club expects more clarity soon. That’s typical February language — evaluation mode, not alarm mode. There’s also the World Baseball Classic angle. O’Brien had been set to represent Team Korea in Tokyo in early March. High-leverage innings in early March are meaningful, but the Cardinals’ priority will be April through September. If there’s any hesitation, expect caution to win the day.The larger question isn’t whether O’Brien misses a few bullpen sessions. It’s whether this creates early movement in the bullpen hierarchy. Spring has a way of creating opportunity when roles temporarily loosen. For now, this reads as a speed bump, not a detour. But in a season where stability at the back end will matter, even minor setbacks deserve attention. February may be about patience — but the ninth inning always demands certainty.

Rob Rains of the St. Louis Sports Page noted on X that Lars Nootbaar, who had missed the first few days of big-league camp because of his offseason heel issues, is now in camp and taking part in workouts today. Nootbaar’s arrival is a positive sign for the Cardinals — he’s coming off offseason surgeries on both heels and had a delayed start to spring training. The St. Louis Cardinals have been preaching patience with Nootbaar’s timeline, and no one should expect them to rush him in mid-February. But his return to camp activity, even in a measured capacity, is a positive development for an outfield picture that already has its share of moving parts. It’s early. It’s February. But seeing Nootbaar back on the field beats the alternative — and that’s the kind of small win you take this time of year. Photo Credit: Sam Navarro | USA TODAY Sports

Clarke Sidelined Until June After Vascular Procedure
The Cardinals’ system will be without one of its more intriguing offseason acquisitions for the first half of the 2026 campaign.Left-hander Brandon Clarke is not expected to be game-ready until June after undergoing a procedure in January to address an aneurysm in his left arm, according to Brian Walton of TheCardinalNation.com. The condition had caused circulation issues, leading to recurring blister problems and numbness in his fingers — a troubling combination for any pitcher, particularly one still refining command and feel.Clarke was acquired from the Boston Red Sox organization in November as part of the deal that sent veteran right-hander Sonny Gray to Boston. At the time, Clarke was viewed as a developmental arm with upside — a power left-hander whose stuff flashes better than the stat line might suggest. In 2025, Clarke was limited to 38 innings between Single-A Salem and High-A Greenville, posting a 4.03 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and a 60:27 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The strikeout numbers indicate swing-and-miss potential, though the walk rate underscores that refinement remains part of the project.Health, of course, now becomes the first priority.Circulation-related issues can be particularly concerning for pitchers. Feel in the fingers is everything — grip, spin efficiency, command. Even minor disruption can snowball mechanically. The fact the issue was identified and addressed surgically is encouraging, but it does push back his developmental timeline. For a Cardinals organization that has emphasized pitching depth and long-term inventory management, Clarke remains a name to monitor. This is not a finished product. It’s a mid-level prospect with tools — now temporarily paused. The Cardinals’ player development staff will likely take a cautious approach once he returns to throwing, prioritizing full recovery over rushing innings in April and May. June becomes the new target. In the big picture, this is a developmental delay — not a derailment. But in a system that values durability as much as upside, Clarke’s 2026 season now begins with one word:Patience. Photo Credit - MLB.com

Nootbaar’s Health First — Trade Speculation Second
Cardinals unlikely to move asset at diminished valueA recent comment by Joey Schneider of KTVI suggesting the St. Louis Cardinals could consider trading Lars Nootbaar before this year’s deadline has generated its share of discussion.Trade talk is part of modern baseball. It fills airtime and winter columns. But timing — and context — matter.Nootbaar, 28, is entering what should be his prime years. When healthy, he provides on-base ability, defensive versatility, and an edge that energizes both the lineup and the clubhouse. The problem has not been talent. The problem has been durability."Nootbaar is coming off a down season in 2025, where he set career lows in batting average (.234), slugging percentage (.361) and OPS (686) while also dealing with a left costochondral sprain that sidelined him for 16 games" ~ Jacob Macofsky, Staff writer TrueBlueLA The heel issues that have followed him for multiple seasons led to surgery on both heels this offseason. He is not expected to be ready by Opening Day. That alone shifts the conversation.A player coming off surgery, with a history of lower-body concerns, does not command peak trade value. Moving him now would almost certainly mean selling below full return. That is not typically how disciplined front offices operate.Under the direction of Chaim Bloom, the Cardinals’ approach is expected to prioritize asset management and long-term structure. Bloom’s reputation has been built on patience and value evaluation, not reactionary moves. Unless there is internal concern that Nootbaar’s health outlook is more troubling than publicly known, it is difficult to see the organization moving him before he reestablishes both health and production.Roster depth does complicate matters. The Cardinals have built outfield options, and younger players are pushing. If the club finds itself out of contention by July, a controllable outfielder with Nootbaar’s offensive profile could draw legitimate interest. But July is a different marketplace than February.First-step quickness, lift at the plate, range in the outfield — all of it begins with healthy feet. Until Nootbaar demonstrates that the surgeries have resolved the lingering issues, trade speculation remains largely theoretical. There is also the intangible factor. He plays hard. He represents the organization well. Those traits are not easily quantified, but they carry weight inside a clubhouse. In the end, this feels less like an imminent move and more like offseason noise. The Cardinals’ most practical path is straightforward: allow Nootbaar to get healthy, evaluate him through the first half, and let performance — and the standings — determine the direction at the deadline.Health first.Speculation second. That’s usually how steady organizations operate.
Cardinals Testing Herrera Beyond the Plate
Herrera’s Outfield Work Signals Roster Flexibility, Not Position ChangeMultiple reports from camp indicate that Iván Herrera, the team's primary designated-hitter last year, who is currently projected as the Cardinals’ No. 1 catcher on the depth chart, has been taking reps in the outfield during Spring Training. On the surface, it raises eyebrows. Underneath, it reflects roster math.Herrera is not new to defensive flexibility. He appeared in three games in left field last season, a quiet but telling experiment that suggests this is continuation — not improvisation. He also could potentially logged time at first base to further reinforce the club’s willingness to expand his defensive profile beyond catcher and designated hitter. The optics this week were interesting. Herrera was seen shagging fly balls with a first baseman’s mitt — an unusual visual for outfield work. In structured spring drills, equipment sometimes follows the station rather than the position, but the image underscored the broader theme: this is experimentation, not a formal conversion. The catchers were working through pop-time drills and throws to second base, while Herrera was shagging flys. The catcher drills are prohibited for Herrera as he continues his recovery from surgery to remove bone spurs in his right elbow, and exploring options other as the team's primary designated-hitter, working out at first and and in lelf makes sense to keep his bat in the lineup. The underlying objective is clear.Herrera’s right-handed bat profiles as playable — particularly against left-handed pitching — on a roster that features significant left-handed presence. If the Cardinals carry Pedro Pagés for defensive stability and Jimmy Crooks as a developing two-way option.Adding corner outfield and first base versatility: • Preserves his bat in the lineup • Reduces physical wear behind the plate • Justifies a potential three-catcher roster • Provides matchup flexibilityThis is not about turning Herrera into an everyday outfielder or first baseman, it is about maximizing offensive value without compromising depth. In February, experimentation costs nothing. By April, roster decisions will reveal whether these reps were precautionary flexibility or part of a larger deployment strategy. For now, it’s roster chess in the Florida sun. Photo Credit - UPI.com
