THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Cubs Take Series Finale in Extras, Beat Cardinals 4-2 St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurOne day after the St. Louis Cardinals pulled a 10th-inning escape act against the Chicago Cubs, the Cubs returned the favor.This time, the Cardinals could not answer.Chicago scored twice in the top of the 10th inning Thursday afternoon at Busch Stadium, then shut down St. Louis in the bottom half to beat the Cardinals, 4-2, and take three of four in the series.It was a frustrating loss because the Cardinals had their chances.Plenty of them.They had 10 hits. They had runners on base. They had Andre Pallante giving them a chance deep into the game. They had JJ Wetherholt tie it in the seventh with one swing. They had their bullpen hold the line long enough to give the offense a shot.But when the game got to extras, Chicago delivered.St. Louis did not.That was the difference.The Cardinals struck first in the second inning. Lars Nootbaar and Masyn Winn drew one-out walks, giving St. Louis an early chance against Cubs starter Javier Assad. Bryan Torres came through with a single to left, scoring Nootbaar and putting the Cardinals ahead, 1-0.It was the kind of inning St. Louis needed to build on.They did not.Blaze Jordan and Nathan Church left runners stranded, and what looked like the beginning of a useful offensive afternoon became another missed chance. That theme followed the Cardinals all day.They had hits.They had traffic.They did not have enough finish.The Cubs tied the game in the fourth, and the run came in a way the Cardinals simply cannot afford. Alex Bregman doubled with one out, and Ian Happ lifted a fly ball to right field. Nootbaar made the catch, but the play did not end there. Bregman alertly kept running, and after the ball came back in, the Cardinals failed to stop the run from scoring.That tied the game, 1-1.It was not a blast.It was not a rally.It was a mistake, and against the Cubs, those tend to hurt a little more.Pallante deserved better than that. He was not dominant, but he was competitive and kept St. Louis in the game. He worked 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts. He threw 90 pitches, 56 for strikes, and leaned on contact, ground balls and enough execution to give the Cardinals a chance to win.That is all they needed from him.That is all a team should need in a home game against a division rival.Pallante kept the Cubs quiet through the early innings and continued to work out of traffic. He was helped by the defense at times, including another strong play from Masyn Winn, who continues to make the difficult look routine. The Cardinals turned two double plays behind Pallante, and for most of the afternoon, St. Louis had the kind of pitching and defense that should have been enough.But the margin was thin from the start.That is what happens when the offense leaves runs on the table.Chicago finally broke through again in the seventh. Dansby Swanson drew a one-out walk, ending Pallante’s afternoon. George Soriano entered and immediately had to deal with a running game. Swanson stole second, moved into scoring position, and after Seiya Suzuki walked, Michael Busch singled to bring Swanson home.The Cubs had a 2-1 lead.It did not last long.Wetherholt answered in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run, turning on a breaking ball and sending it out to tie the game, 2-2. It was his 16th homer of the season and another reminder that even during an uneven stretch for the offense, the rookie can still change a game in one swing.That swing mattered.It gave the Cardinals life.It also should have been the opening for more.Instead, the game stayed tied.Ryan Stanek worked a scoreless eighth. Riley O’Brien handled the ninth. The Cardinals had another chance in the bottom of the ninth, but they could not finish it. José Fermín reached with one out, Wetherholt followed by grounding into a fielder’s choice, and Jordan Walker got a pitch he could drive but flew out deep to left.A few more feet, maybe the story changes.It did not.For the second straight day, the Cubs and Cardinals went to the 10th inning. On Wednesday night, the Cubs had taken a two-run lead in the top half before Iván Herrera helped bring St. Louis back for a walk-off win.Thursday looked uncomfortably similar.Only this time, the ending belonged to Chicago.Luis Gastelum took the mound in the top of the 10th with Suzuki as the automatic runner at second. Busch grounded out to first, moving Suzuki to third. Bregman then lined a double down the right-field line, scoring Suzuki and putting the Cubs ahead, 3-2.Then came Happ.The Cardinals have seen enough of Happ over the years to know how dangerous he can be in these moments. He doubled, scoring Bregman and pushing the lead to 4-2.That was the inning.That was the game.Gastelum limited the damage to two runs, only one earned because of the automatic runner, but in extra innings, the accounting matters less than the scoreboard. The Cubs got the big hits. The Cardinals needed to respond.They could not.Walker began the bottom of the 10th as the automatic runner at second. Alec Burleson lined out to center. Jimmy Crooks came off the bench and flied out. Nootbaar worked the count but struck out to end the game.Chicago had held the line.St. Louis had let another winnable game slip away.The Cardinals finished with 10 hits, but only two runs. Wetherholt went 2-for-5 with the homer and the stolen base. Torres had two hits and drove in the first run. Burleson, Herrera, Winn, Jordan, Fermín and Blaze Jordan each had a hit.The production was scattered.That was the problem.St. Louis went through too many innings with runners aboard and not enough damage behind it. The Cardinals left 10 men on base. Nathan Church left four runners stranded in his two at-bats. Herrera left four. Jordan left four. Nootbaar left three. Walker struck out three times.That adds up.It added up Thursday to a series loss.For Chicago, the key swings came from Bregman and Happ in the 10th, but the Cubs had steady pressure throughout the afternoon. Pete Crow-Armstrong had two hits. Nico Hoerner had three. Busch had two hits and drove in a run. Bregman had two doubles and scored twice. Happ’s double gave Chicago the insurance run it needed.The Cubs did not hit a home run.They did not need one.They ran the bases well, took advantage of a Cardinals mistake, and came through in extras.That is how a road team steals a series finale.For the Cardinals, this one will sting because it came less than 24 hours after one of the better wins of the season. Wednesday night had the feel of a possible spark. Dustin May gave them five shutout innings, the bullpen kept them alive, and Herrera delivered in the 10th. It was the kind of win that could have changed the tone of the series.Instead, the Cardinals came back Thursday and could not carry it forward.That is the frustrating part.They did not play poorly enough to get buried.They played just well enough to stay in the game and just poorly enough to lose it.That has been too familiar.The Cardinals are now 54-54, back at .500, with the trade deadline sitting right on top of them. That record matters. This series matters. These games against the Cubs matter. Kyle Leahy is scheduled to start Friday night in Toronto, and the Cardinals will need to regroup quickly. There is no time to sit around and wonder what this series could have been.But there is no hiding from what it was.The Cubs won three of four.The Cardinals are back to .500.And Thursday afternoon, one day after stealing a game in the 10th, St. Louis watched Chicago return the favor. The Cardinal Chronicle Quinn Mathews Gets the Call for His MLB Debut in Toronto St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurQuinn Mathews is getting the call.The St. Louis Cardinals are promoting the 25-year-old left-hander from Triple-A Memphis, with Mathews expected to make his Major League debut Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays.For Mathews, it is the next step in a professional climb that has included dominance, injury questions, command concerns, adjustments, and now, finally, the opportunity every minor league pitcher is chasing.For the Cardinals, it is more than just another start.It is an evaluation.It is a rotation reinforcement.And with the trade deadline sitting right on the doorstep, it may also be a glimpse at how much the organization believes its next wave of pitching can help shape both the present and the future.Mathews has earned the look.Before the call-up, the southpaw had made 19 starts for Triple-A Memphis, posting a 3.13 ERA over 92 innings. He struck out 111 hitters, carried a 1.14 WHIP, and held opposing hitters to a low batting average. Those numbers tell part of the story.The strikeouts tell another.Mathews has never lacked bat-missing ability. That has always been the hook. When his delivery is synced, his fastball plays, his changeup gets uncomfortable swings, and his breaking stuff gives him more than one way to attack hitters. THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Series Preview: Cardinals Head North With the Trade Deadline Closing In St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals cross the border tonight to open a three-game weekend series against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.Friday’s opener is scheduled for 6:07 p.m. CT, followed by a 2:07 p.m. start Saturday and a 12:37 p.m. finale Sunday. All three games will be televised on Cardinals.TV and carried on the Cardinals Radio Network.The series begins with both clubs below .500 and facing difficult questions with Monday’s 6 p.m. ET trade deadline approaching.St. Louis enters at 54-55, three games behind Arizona and Philadelphia for the final National League Wild Card position. Toronto is 50-59 and 5½ games behind Cleveland for the final American League Wild Card.The Cardinals remain close enough to discuss October, but they have done very little since the All-Star break to strengthen that argument.St. Louis lost three of four to the Chicago Cubs at Busch Stadium, finishing the series with a 4-2 loss in 10 innings Thursday. The Cardinals scored only 10 runs during the four games and have lost 10 of their past 14.Thursday’s defeat included another painful combination of missed opportunities, poor execution and questionable decision-making.Andre Pallante allowed only two runs over 6⅓ innings, but the Cardinals could not provide enough offense. JJ Wetherholt tied the game with his 16th home run, only for Chicago to score twice in the top of the 10th on Alex Bregman’s go-ahead double and an insurance run.Lars Nootbaar also lost track of the number of outs in the fourth inning, allowing Bregman to score from second after a routine fly ball. Nootbaar took responsibility after the game and acknowledged that Thursday could have been his final appearance at Busch Stadium if the Cardinals decide to trade him before Monday’s deadline.The mistake was costly, but one play did not decide the series.The Cardinals lost because Chicago consistently played better baseball.The Cubs produced more quality at-bats, created more pressure and took advantage of nearly every additional opportunity St. Louis gave them. The Cardinals managed one dramatic walk-off victory Wednesday, but otherwise spent most of the series chasing the game.That cannot continue in Toronto.The Blue Jays may have a worse record, but their rotation presents three very different challenges.Friday’s opener features Kyle Leahy against Dylan Cease.Leahy enters at 7-4 with a 3.55 ERA and 88 strikeouts. He has quietly become one of the Cardinals’ most dependable starters, posting a 1.15 ERA over his past six outings.His most recent start came Sunday against Cincinnati, when he struck out a career-high nine and allowed three earned runs over six innings. The Cardinals eventually lost 6-3 in 10 innings, but Leahy again gave them an opportunity to win.He has done that throughout the season.Leahy does not receive the attention given to the hardest throwers or highest-ranked prospects, but he attacks the strike zone, changes speeds and understands how to work through a lineup. He has gone from a flexible bullpen option to a legitimate Major League starter.The Cardinals will need every bit of that consistency tonight because Cease may be the most difficult pitcher they have faced this season.Cease enters at 7-5 with a 2.46 ERA and 167 strikeouts. He is coming off a complete-game one-hit shutout against Boston in which he struck out 12 and threw a career-high 120 pitches.Cease also carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning earlier this month and has worked his way into the American League Cy Young Award race.His record is misleading because Toronto has not consistently supported him.The stuff is not.Cease can overpower hitters with upper-90s velocity and one of baseball’s best breaking balls. He misses bats, creates uncomfortable swings and can dominate a game once he establishes the strike zone.The Cardinals cannot approach him passively.There is value in working the count, but hitters cannot allow hittable fastballs to pass simply because they are determined to see more pitches. Cease becomes even more dangerous when he gets ahead and can expand the strike zone with two strikes.St. Louis must be ready to attack mistakes early.The offense continues to lean heavily on Jordan Walker and Alec Burleson.Walker enters the series batting .281 with a .342 on-base percentage, 22 home runs and 78 RBI. Burleson is batting .282 with 15 home runs, 71 RBI and an .801 OPS.They have been the Cardinals’ most consistent run producers, but the lineup cannot continue asking two hitters to carry the entire offense.Wetherholt has provided 16 home runs, 12 stolen bases and a .349 on-base percentage during an impressive rookie season. Iván Herrera continues to reach base at a strong rate, while Masyn Winn, Nootbaar, Nathan Church, Blaze Jordan and Bryan Torres must help create longer innings.Against Cease, one scoring opportunity may be all the Cardinals receive.They must cash it in.Saturday provides the most anticipated game of the series when left-hander Quinn Mathews makes his Major League debut against veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman.Mathews’ promotion offers some needed excitement during a disappointing stretch for the organization.The 25-year-old struggled early at Triple-A Memphis, posting a 5.85 ERA in May. He lowered that mark to 2.05 across five June starts and was even better in July, recording a 1.04 ERA over four outings.Mathews completed at least six innings in each of those four starts and has struck out 111 batters over 92 innings this season.His latest outing may have finished the argument over whether he was ready. Mathews threw seven innings, allowed one run and struck out 10.The Cardinals could no longer reasonably claim there was nothing left for him to prove at Memphis.Manager Oliver Marmol announced Thursday that Mathews will start Saturday. The Cardinals must add him to both the 26-man and 40-man rosters before the game.The timing is interesting.The Cardinals insist Mathews is not immediately replacing a member of the current rotation. His addition gives the other starters an extra day of rest and prevents Dustin May from being scheduled to pitch Monday, the day of the trade deadline.That may be coincidence.It may also make it considerably easier to trade May without disrupting the rotation.Either way, Mathews deserves this opportunity.His fastball does not overwhelm hitters with elite velocity, but it plays up because of his delivery and deception. He pairs it with a changeup and breaking pitches that allow him to miss bats against hitters from both sides of the plate.The biggest question has always been command.When Mathews stays in the strike zone and avoids deep counts, he has the pitch mix and durability to work through a Major League lineup. When the walks increase, his pitch count can prevent him from reaching the middle innings.Toronto will test him immediately.Gausman enters at 4-10 with a 4.51 ERA and 123 strikeouts. The record is poor, but he remains a dangerous veteran with a fastball-splitter combination capable of controlling a game.He also enters the weekend surrounded by trade speculation.Toronto is expected to listen on several veteran pitchers before Monday, and Gausman has acknowledged the uncertainty while expressing a desire to remain with the Blue Jays.That makes Saturday more than a prospect debut.It may also be Gausman’s final start in a Toronto uniform.Sunday’s finale matches Michael McGreevy against three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer.McGreevy enters at 4-9 with a 3.57 ERA and 76 strikeouts.His last start was the worst of his Major League career. The Cubs scored seven runs on eight hits against him before he could complete the second inning Tuesday.That outing should not erase everything McGreevy accomplished before it.He carried an ERA near 3.00 for most of the season, regularly pitched into the sixth or seventh inning and gave the Cardinals an opportunity to win despite inconsistent run support.Sunday offers him an immediate chance to respond.McGreevy does not have overpowering velocity, so his margin for error is smaller. He must locate his fastball, change eye levels and keep hitters from sitting on one area of the strike zone.When his command is sharp, he can work quickly and produce weak contact.When it is not, a lineup can string together hits in a hurry, as Chicago demonstrated.Scherzer enters at 1-4 with a 9.49 ERA after spending much of the season dealing with injuries.The 42-year-old recently returned from the injured list and threw 75 pitches over 2⅔ innings against Washington on his birthday. He allowed one run but struggled to work efficiently.Scherzer is no longer the automatic seven-inning ace he was during his prime, but the Cardinals should not confuse diminished results with an easy assignment.He still competes, understands how to change a hitter’s timing and possesses enough swing-and-miss stuff to dominate an undisciplined lineup.The Cardinals must force him into the strike zone and avoid expanding against breaking pitches below the zone.Toronto’s offense has been one of the reasons the club has fallen from contention.The Blue Jays have scored 430 runs while allowing 490. Third baseman Kazuma Okamoto leads the club with 24 home runs and 68 RBI, while Ernie Clement is batting .294 with 27 doubles.Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is batting .265 with a .345 on-base percentage, but his power production has fallen sharply to six home runs and a .357 slugging percentage.Guerrero also missed Wednesday’s game with right hamstring tightness and is considered day to day entering the series.George Springer, Daulton Varsho, Nathan Lukes and Andrés Giménez provide additional experience, while Toronto has begun creating opportunities for younger players as attention shifts toward the future.That sounds familiar.Both teams entered the season expecting more.Both remain below .500.Both are approaching a deadline that could reshape their rosters before the series is complete.Toronto is more clearly positioned to sell, sitting 5½ games out of the final American League Wild Card with six teams ahead of it.The Cardinals’ position is more complicated.Three games is not an impossible deficit with two months remaining. However, St. Louis has played poorly enough since the break to make its record feel worse than it is.The front office must decide whether the possibility of reaching the postseason outweighs the value available for May, Ryne Stanek, Nootbaar or any other player drawing interest.Those decisions should not prevent the Cardinals from trying to win the series.A rebuild, retool or transition does not require the players on the field to accept losing baseball.Leahy is trying to establish himself as a long-term starter.Mathews is beginning his Major League career.McGreevy is trying to rebound from his worst start.Walker, Wetherholt, Herrera, Burleson and the rest of the young core are still building toward whatever comes next.Every game matters to their development because winning should always be part of development.The Cardinals must leave the frustrating Cubs series behind them.They need Leahy to keep tonight close against one of baseball’s best pitchers.They need the offense to support Mathews rather than asking a rookie to be perfect in his debut.They need McGreevy to respond Sunday and remind everyone why he had become one of the rotation’s most dependable pitchers.Most importantly, they need to win a series.The Cardinals are still within reach of the final Wild Card, but simply remaining close is not an accomplishment.At some point, they must stop talking about opportunities and begin taking advantage of them.Three games in Toronto.Three fascinating pitching matchups.One highly anticipated Major League debut.And a trade deadline waiting on the other side of the weekend.By Monday evening, the Cardinals may look different, how they play in Toronto could help determine just how much different.

THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE MiLB Pitcher of the Day: Andrew Dutkanych IV Sets the Tone for Palm Beach St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurAndrew Dutkanych IV gave Palm Beach the kind of start that makes everything easier.Dutkanych is the Cardinal Chronicle Pitcher of the Day after working five strong innings in the Cardinals’ 9-3 win over Fort Myers on Thursday night.His final line:5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 KThat is a winning line.Dutkanych allowed only three hits, kept Fort Myers off the earned-run column, walked two and struck out seven. He gave Palm Beach length, missed bats and kept the game under control long enough for the offense to keep adding on.The only run charged to him was unearned, and that matters. He did not let the inning get away from him. Brayden Smith went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Miguel Hernández had three hits, hit his first home run and scored three times. Ryan Weingartner also homered, walked, stole a base and scored twice. Trevor Haskins added two hits, an RBI and a stolen base.That gave Dutkanych plenty of room, but his work on the mound still set the tone.The bullpen finished it from there. Nathan Shinn, Hunter Kublick, Justin Militello and Jesús García combined to cover the final four innings, allowing only two runs, one earned.Palm Beach improved to 51-47 overall, and the win gave the Cardinals another solid night in the Florida State League race.But the pitching headline belonged to Dutkanych.Five innings. THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE MiLB Player of the Day: Joshua Báez Again St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurJoshua Báez continues to put together one of the loudest power seasons in the Cardinals’ minor league system.Báez is the Cardinal Chronicle Player of the Day after going 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored in Memphis’ 11-4 win over Jacksonville in the first game of Thursday’s doubleheader.His final line: 3-for-4, HR, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 2 RThe home run was his 32nd of the season, and the four RBIs pushed him to 81 on the year.The Redbirds scored four runs in the first inning and two more in the second, and Báez was right in the middle of the early push. Memphis finished with 11 runs on 11 hits, but Báez supplied the biggest offensive performance of the game.He had help. Nolan Gorman homered and drove in two. Thomas Saggese doubled and scored twice. Leo Bernal tripled, drove in a run and scored twice. Chase Davis doubled and drove in a run. César Prieto and Ramon Mendoza also added RBIs.But the day belonged to Báez.For a player whose power has been one of the defining stories of the Cardinals’ farm system this season, Thursday was another reminder of what he can do when he is locked in. The ball jumps. The extra-base impact is real. And when he is driving in runs at this pace, every box score deserves a closer look.Memphis split the doubleheader, winning the opener before dropping the nightcap in extra innings. Báez added a walk and a stolen base in the second game, giving him another way to impact the day beyond the power.Still, the headline was the opener.Three hits. Three extra-base hits. Four RBIs.
