THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Andrew Schultz’s Road From Independent Ball to Memphis St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurAndrew Schultz is moving up to Memphis.That may not sound like the biggest transaction in the Cardinals’ system at first glance, but it is exactly the kind of move that deserves a closer look.The St. Louis Cardinals purchased Schultz’s contract from the independent Lancaster Stormers of the Atlantic League on June 8, 2026. He was initially assigned to Double-A Springfield, where he had the opportunity to prove that his independent-ball dominance could carry over against affiliated hitters.Now, after a strong stretch with Springfield, Schultz is headed to Triple-A Memphis.That is a real step.For a 28-year-old right-handed reliever who has already lived several chapters of professional baseball, this is not just another minor league transaction. This is a reminder that the road to Triple-A, and maybe beyond, does not always run through the first round of the draft, prospect lists or signing-bonus headlines.Sometimes it runs through independent baseball.Schultz earned this opportunity the hard way.Before the Cardinals came calling, he had been outstanding for Lancaster. Working as the Stormers’ closer, Schultz posted a 1.64 ERA over 16 appearances. He allowed only four hits in 16 innings, struck out 31, recorded six saves and, for a stretch, threw 9.2 hitless and scoreless innings over 10 appearances.Those are not ordinary numbers.That is domination.Independent baseball can be easy for some fans to dismiss, but that would be a mistake. The Atlantic League is full of experienced players, former affiliated arms, older hitters and professionals trying to keep their careers alive. It is not rookie ball. THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Series Preview: Cardinals Enter Divisional Gauntlet Against the Reds St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals do not have much time to dwell on Thursday afternoon’s missed opportunity against the Arizona Diamondbacks.The Cincinnati Reds arrive at Busch Stadium tonight to begin a three-game National League Central series, and the Cardinals need to turn the page quickly after losing six of their last eight games.St. Louis enters the weekend at 52-50 and remains within striking distance of the final National League Wild Card position. The Cardinals are 1½ games behind Arizona and one-half game behind Pittsburgh, but the margin for error is beginning to shrink as the trade deadline approaches. Cincinnati is 47-54, six games behind Arizona, but the Reds have won consecutive road series against Colorado and Seattle.&nbsp;This is where the divisional gauntlet begins to take shape.Following the three games against Cincinnati, the Cardinals will remain home for two games against the Chicago Cubs. They will then face the Milwaukee Brewers and Reds again during an August schedule filled with games that could determine whether St. Louis remains in the postseason race.The Cardinals have handled Cincinnati well this season, winning four of the first five meetings.St. Louis split a May 23 doubleheader at Great American Ball Park before sweeping a three-game series at Busch Stadium from June 5-7. The Cardinals outscored the Reds 29-19 in those five games, although two were decided by one run. The clubs will meet again for five games in Cincinnati from Aug. 17-20, including a split doubleheader created by the May 24 rainout.&nbsp;A 4-1 advantage is encouraging, but it guarantees nothing this weekend.Cincinnati arrives playing better baseball than its record suggests. The Reds took two of three in Colorado and followed that by winning two of three in Seattle. They closed the Mariners series Wednesday with a 5-3 victory, as Sal Stewart hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the seventh inning.&nbsp;The Cardinals are moving in the opposite direction.Thursday’s 10-6 loss to Arizona dropped St. Louis to 2-6 over its last eight games. The Cardinals led 2-0 early, but Michael McGreevy allowed four runs over 6⅓ innings before the bullpen surrendered six more. Arizona collected 16 hits and scored five times in the eighth inning to put the game away.&nbsp;The four-run ninth inning made the final score look more respectable, but it did not change the outcome.For the Cardinals, the recurring problem has been an inability to play a complete game.There have been days when the starting pitching has been good enough, but the offense has disappeared. There have been games when the lineup has created an early lead, only for the bullpen to surrender it. There have also been nights when the Cardinals have fallen behind immediately and spent the rest of the game trying to climb out of the hole.That cannot continue against a division rival.Friday’s opener will feature right-hander Dustin May against Cincinnati right-hander Rhett Lowder. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. CT, with the game available on Cardinals.TV, KMOV-4 and KMOX.May enters at 5-7 with a 4.78 ERA and 95 strikeouts. Since throwing a complete-game, one-hit shutout against San Diego on June 15, he is 0-1 with a 9.92 ERA over five starts.His most recent appearance came Saturday in Arizona, when he allowed five runs on eight hits and four walks over five innings. It was the first time in more than a month that May completed five innings, but he again struggled to control damage once traffic reached the bases.&nbsp;The Cardinals need May to rediscover the pitcher they saw earlier this season.When healthy and commanding the baseball, he can generate ground balls, miss bats and work deep into games. When his command drifts, innings become long and his pitch count climbs quickly.May will be facing Cincinnati for the first time in his career.Lowder enters at 3-7 with a 5.75 ERA and 61 strikeouts. The 24-year-old was moved to the bullpen after making his first 13 appearances as a starter, but he returned to the rotation following the All-Star break.That return did not go well.Lowder allowed eight runs on 11 hits over 2⅓ innings Saturday at Colorado. However, the Cardinals should not assume he will be an easy assignment. Lowder has thrown eight scoreless innings in two career starts against St. Louis, including three scoreless innings with five walks on June 7.&nbsp;Saturday’s game will begin at 6:15 p.m. CT and match right-hander Andre Pallante against Reds right-hander Hunter Greene.Pallante is 10-6 with a 4.02 ERA and 75 strikeouts. He has been one of the Cardinals’ more reliable starters this season, particularly when his sinker is producing early contact and keeping the ball on the ground.Greene enters at 2-1 with a 6.06 ERA and 26 strikeouts. His season has again been interrupted, but his triple-digit fastball and power slider still make him capable of dominating a lineup when he is healthy and locating his pitches.&nbsp;The Cardinals cannot allow Greene’s velocity to speed up their at-bats.They must make him work, avoid expanding the strike zone and take advantage when he falls behind in counts. Greene has the kind of stuff that can overwhelm a lineup, but his outings can change quickly when opponents force him to throw strikes.Sunday’s finale is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. CT, with right-hander Kyle Leahy facing Cincinnati left-hander Andrew Abbott.Leahy is 7-4 with a 3.59 ERA and 79 strikeouts. He has become one of the most valuable pitchers on the Cardinals staff, moving between roles and providing quality innings whenever the rotation has needed him.Abbott enters at 5-6 with a 3.89 ERA and 90 strikeouts. He may represent Cincinnati’s best opportunity to control a game this weekend. His speed places pressure on a defense even when he does not drive the ball, and the Cardinals cannot afford to give him free passes.&nbsp;Stewart has emerged as Cincinnati’s most productive run producer. The 22-year-old All-Star ranks fourth in the majors with 74 RBI and has driven in nine runs since the break, despite batting only .130 during that stretch. Spencer Steer also brings right-handed power and is coming off a two-home run game at Colorado.&nbsp;The Reds may be under .500, but this is not a lineup the Cardinals can take lightly.For St. Louis, the offense must create more consistent pressure.JJ Wetherholt continues to provide energy near the top of the order. Jordan Walker and Alec Burleson remain the club’s most dangerous power threats, while Lars Nootbaar drove in three runs Thursday. Iván Herrera’s ability to reach base also remains important, particularly when the Cardinals place him ahead of the middle of the lineup.However, isolated production is not enough.The Cardinals need several hitters contributing during the same inning. They need to move runners, cash in scoring opportunities and avoid leaving their pitchers with no margin for error.They also need cleaner work from the bullpen.JoJo Romero’s absence following appendicitis has removed an important late-inning option. Riley O’Brien has endured several difficult outings, while the middle-relief group has struggled to consistently bridge the gap between the starters and the ninth inning.Oliver Marmol may need to manage these games with greater urgency.The Cardinals cannot continue saving their best available relievers for a lead that may never arrive. In a crowded Wild Card race, the highest-leverage moment may come in the sixth or seventh inning, not necessarily the ninth.The trade deadline will hover over this series as well.Cincinnati’s recent improvement may complicate its decision about whether to sell, but a poor weekend in St. Louis could push the Reds further out of contention. The Cardinals, meanwhile, remain close enough to the postseason race that every victory strengthens the argument for remaining competitive.The front office may call this a transition year, retooling season or evaluation period.The players in the clubhouse are still trying to win.This weekend offers the Cardinals an opportunity to recover from a disappointing road trip and Thursday’s loss to Arizona. They have already beaten Cincinnati four times this season, and they will have the home-field advantage throughout the weekend.Taking two of three should be the minimum expectation.A sweep would restore momentum and allow St. Louis to gain ground before the Cubs arrive.A series loss would deepen the concerns surrounding a team that has already allowed several winnable games to slip away since the All-Star break.The Cardinals have reached the point where the schedule is no longer offering many harmless games.Division opponents are coming. The trade deadline is approaching. The Wild Card standings are tightening.It is time to start seeing red — and doing something about it. THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Yohel Pozo Claimed by Orioles, Ending a Short but Memorable Cardinals Stint St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurYohel Pozo’s time with the St. Louis Cardinals has officially come to an end.The Baltimore Orioles claimed Pozo off waivers from the Cardinals and optioned him directly to Triple-A Norfolk, where he gives Baltimore needed catching depth, a right-handed bat, and some roster flexibility with the ability to handle catcher, first base, and designated hitter duties.For the Orioles, the move makes sense.For the Cardinals, it reflects the reality of a roster crunch.And for a lot of Cardinals fans, it still stings a little.Pozo was never the biggest name on the roster. He was never the face of the franchise. He was not a top prospect, a headline-grabbing acquisition, or the kind of player who gets built into long-term marketing campaigns.But he became easy to root for.That matters.Pozo’s path to St. Louis was not polished or easy. He came to the Cardinals as a depth catcher and worked his way into the picture with a simple, valuable profile: put the ball in play, give professional at-bats, provide emergency catching coverage, and offer enough bat to be useful when the roster needed help.There is still a place in baseball for that kind of player.There should always be a place for that kind of player.In 2025, Pozo became one of the better underdog stories around the Cardinals. He was not just a transaction line. He was a reminder that baseball careers are often built in the margins, by players who keep showing up, keep working, and keep saying yes when another opportunity appears.Fans connected with that.They saw the effort. Leo Bernal continues to offer defensive value in the upper minors. Rainiel Rodriguez is one of the most exciting young catching prospects in the system.At some point, there are only so many spots.Pozo became the odd man out.That does not mean he lacked value. It means the Cardinals had to prioritize roster flexibility, 40-man space, and players they believe fit more clearly into the next stage of the organization. That is the cold part of baseball. THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Cardinal Chronicle Player of the Day: Thomas Saggese Powers Memphis to Extra-Inning Win St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurMemphis needed someone to step up Thursday night, and Thomas Saggese answered.Saggese is the Cardinal Chronicle Player of the Day after going 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored in the Redbirds’ 7-5, 10-inning win over Durham at AutoZone Park.His final line:3-for-5, HR, 2B, 3 RBI, 3 RThat is a complete offensive night, and it came at the right time for a Memphis club that badly needed to stop the bleeding.The Redbirds entered the night stuck in a rough second-half stretch and riding a four-game losing streak. They got off to a good start, gave the lead away in the middle innings, then found a way to answer late. Saggese was right in the middle of it.He homered, doubled, drove in three runs and scored three times. In a game that went 10 innings, every one of those contributions mattered.Memphis scored twice in the first, added another run in the fourth, tied the game in the eighth, and then won it with three runs in the bottom of the 10th. The offense was not overwhelming, but it was timely. Saggese gave the Redbirds the extra-base thump they needed.He was not alone.Colton Ledbetter also had a big night, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a stolen base. Joshua Báez drove in his 74th run of the season, and Noah Mendlinger added an RBI.But this night belonged to Saggese.His season has had its uneven stretches, but games like this are a reminder of the offensive ability that made him one of the more recognizable names in the Cardinals’ upper minors. When Saggese is driving the baseball and impacting the game with extra-base hits, he gives the Memphis lineup a much different look.The home run was his fourth of the season with Memphis. The double was his sixth. He also pushed his RBI total to 16 and lifted his average to .246 with a .714 OPS.The numbers still show there is work to do, but Thursday night was a strong step in the right direction.For Memphis, the win mattered. The Redbirds improved to 56-43 overall and snapped their losing streak. The second half has been a grind, but a 10-inning win like this can at least give a club a chance to reset.Saggese gave Memphis the spark.A home run. A double. Three RBIs. THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE MiLB Pitcher of the Day: Yhoiker Fajardo Delivers in a 1-0 Peoria Win St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurIn a 1-0 game, every pitch matters.On Thursday night, Yhoiker Fajardo gave Peoria exactly what it needed.Fajardo is the Cardinal Chronicle Pitcher of the Day after throwing 4.2 scoreless innings in the Chiefs’ 1-0 win over West Michigan at Dozer Park.His final line: 4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 KThat is the kind of line that gets your attention.Fajardo did not allow a run. He did not walk a batter. He allowed only two hits. And he struck out eight, giving Peoria nearly five innings of dominant work in a game where the Chiefs’ offense had almost no margin for error.Peoria managed only three hits on the night, but the pitching staff made one run enough. Fajardo set the tone, and the bullpen followed his lead. Bobby Olsen, Dominic Freeberger and Christian Worley combined to finish the shutout, with the staff holding West Michigan to four hits while striking out 14.But the night starts with Fajardo.The right-hander threw 76 pitches, 55 for strikes, faced 17 batters and pounded the zone. That strike-throwing matters, especially for a pitcher whose development path still includes command questions.Fajardo remains one of the more interesting arms in the Cardinals’ system because the strikeout ability is real. THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Farm Report: Clean Sweep on the Farm as Peoria Wins a 1-0 Duel St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThursday was exactly the kind of night the Cardinals’ farm system needed.After several uneven reports, the full-season affiliates came through with a 4-0 sweep. Memphis won in 10 innings. Springfield answered with a 10-inning win of its own. Peoria won a 1-0 pitching duel behind Yhoiker Fajardo and a dominant bullpen effort. Palm Beach handled Tampa behind strong pitching and another homer from Yordalin Peña.The headline performance at the plate belonged to Thomas Saggese, while the best pitching line came from Yhoiker Fajardo.Memphis Redbirds — Triple-A Overall Record: 56-43 Second Half: 9-15, tied for ninth in the International League West, 7.0 GB Streak: W1Memphis 7, Durham 5 — 10 inningsMemphis finally stopped the slide, beating Durham 7-5 in 10 innings at AutoZone Park.The Redbirds scored three runs in the bottom of the 10th to win it, and Thomas Saggese was the offensive star. Saggese went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored, earning Cardinal Chronicle Player of the Day honors.Colton Ledbetter also had a strong night, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a stolen base. Joshua Báez drove in his 74th run of the season, while Noah Mendlinger added an RBI single.On the mound, Memphis used four pitchers. Brandt Thompson worked 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Hancel Rincón had command issues but struck out four over 1.2 innings. Victor Santos was excellent, throwing two scoreless innings with four strikeouts, and Ryan Fernandez handled the final two innings, allowing one unearned run.Takeaway: Memphis needed this one badly. The second half has been rough, but Saggese and Ledbetter carried the offense, and the Redbirds found a way to win late.Springfield Cardinals — Double-A Overall Record: 45-47 Second Half: 14-10, tied for first in the Texas League North Streak: W1Springfield 5, Northwest Arkansas 4 — 10 inningsSpringfield got back in the win column with a 5-4, 10-inning win over Northwest Arkansas.This was a strong bounce-back win for a team trying to stay at the top of the Texas League North second-half race. The Cardinals improved to 14-10 in the second half, moving back into a tie for first place with Tulsa.Trey Paige had one of the biggest offensive nights, going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a walk. Jesús Báez hit his ninth home run of the season and drove in a run. Miguel Ugueto doubled and drove in a run, while Dakota Harris added an RBI. Springfield also got stolen bases from Won-Bin Cho, Tre Richardson III and Zach Levenson.On the mound, Blake Aita gave Springfield 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Nolan Sparks allowed two runs in relief, but Michael Watson steadied the game with 1.1 scoreless innings.The late hero on the mound was Randel Clemente, who threw two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out six. That is a loud relief appearance in extra innings.Takeaway: Springfield needed a response after a three-game skid, and this was a good one. The Cardinals are back tied for first, and Clemente slammed the door with authority.Peoria Chiefs — High-A Overall Record: 44-48 Second Half: 12-14, fifth in the Midwest League West, 4.5 GB Streak: W3Peoria 1, West Michigan 0Peoria won the pitchers’ duel of the night, beating West Michigan 1-0 at Dozer Park.The Chiefs managed only three hits, but they made the one run count. Ian Petrutz drove in the only run of the game, bringing home Jalin Flores in the bottom of the ninth. Flores had one of Peoria’s three hits, while Josh Kross and Anyelo Encarnación added the others.The story was pitching.Yhoiker Fajardo was outstanding, throwing 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits, walking none and striking out eight. He threw 76 pitches, 55 for strikes, and set the tone for a dominant staff effort.Bobby Olsen, Dominic Freeberger and Christian Worley finished the shutout. Worley was excellent over the final two innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.As a staff, Peoria held West Michigan to four hits, walked only two and struck out 14.Takeaway: This was old-fashioned winning baseball. Pitching, defense and one timely run. Peoria has now won three straight, and the Chiefs are starting to show some life in the second-half race.Palm Beach Cardinals — Low-A Overall Record: 48-44 Second Half: standings not included in supplied table Streak: W1Palm Beach 5, Tampa 1Palm Beach handled Tampa 5-1 behind a strong pitching effort and a productive night from the lower half of the lineup.Yordalin Peña hit his 14th home run of the season and drove in his 53rd run, continuing a strong offensive year. Ryan Mitchell went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while Jonathan Mejía doubled. Brayden Smith drove in his 30th run of the season, and the Cardinals stole six bases as a team.Palm Beach did strike out 15 times, but the Cardinals also drew seven walks and kept pressure on Tampa all night.On the mound, Brian Holiday worked 5.1 innings, allowing one run on 10 hits. That is a lot of traffic, but he made pitches when he had to and limited the damage. Liam Best, Joseph King, Antoni Cuello and Jesús García combined for 3.2 scoreless innings to finish it.Cuello struck out two in a clean eighth, and García closed it out in the ninth.Takeaway: Tampa had 11 hits but only one run. That tells you Palm Beach pitchers made pitches in traffic, and the bullpen did its job.
