Springfield has played plenty of high-stress baseball lately, with late leads, one-run losses and games that seemed to turn sideways in a hurry. Friday was different. Chen-Wei Lin gave the Cardinals six hitless innings, and the offense gave him plenty of room to work.Harris helped make sure of that.His two doubles and four RBIs gave Springfield the kind of run production that changes a game. He was not just collecting hits. He was driving in runs, extending innings and helping turn a strong pitching performance into a comfortable win.That matters.The Cardinals had several players contribute. Springfield got six hitless innings from Chen-Wei Lin and an 18-hit attack in a 10-4 win at Wichita. Peoria lost 7-3 to Dayton, extending its losing streak to six games. Palm Beach did not finish its game against Jupiter and will resume Saturday.The headline belongs to pitching.Chen-Wei Lin gave Springfield six hitless innings.Brycen Mautz gave Memphis 5.2 innings of one-run baseball.Luis Gastelum, Ryan Fernandez and Scott Blewett finished the Redbirds’ win.It was a good night for arms at the top of the system.Memphis Redbirds Record: 46-27, International League West Standings: 1st place, International League West Result: Memphis 4, Nashville 1Memphis did exactly what a first-place club is supposed to do Friday night.The Redbirds beat Nashville 4-1 at AutoZone Park, stayed alone in first place, eliminated the Sounds from first-half contention and cut their magic number to two with two games left in the first half.That is taking care of business.Bligh Madris gave Memphis its first lead in the opening inning. César Prieto reached, and Madris brought him home with a two-out RBI single to put the Redbirds ahead 1-0.Nashville tied the game, but Madris came through again in the sixth. With the game tied 1-1 and the bases loaded, Madris delivered another run-scoring hit to put Memphis back in front.That was the swing that changed the game.Leo Bernal gave the Redbirds breathing room in the eighth, driving a two-run home run to right-center field and into the Memphis bullpen. That gave the Redbirds a 4-1 lead and let the pitching staff finish the night with room to work.Brycen Mautz started for Memphis and gave the Redbirds 5.2 innings of one-run baseball. The left-hander allowed three hits, walked five and struck out three. The walks made him work, but he limited the damage and kept Nashville from getting the big inning.That has been the key with Mautz.Even when it is not perfectly clean, he keeps the game in front of him.Luis Gastelum picked up the win with 1.1 perfect innings, striking out three. Ryan Fernandez, making his first MLB rehab appearance, worked a perfect eighth on just 10 pitches. Scott Blewett handled the ninth and earned his fifth save, getting a double play to end it.That is a clean finish.Memphis is now 35-1 when leading after eight innings. Cade McGee answered in the bottom half with an opposite-field home run to right, cutting the deficit to 2-1.But Dayton kept adding on.Alfredo Alcantara hit a solo home run in the second, and Jacob Friend added a sacrifice fly later in the inning to make it 4-1.Peoria tried to fight back. In the fourth, Jalin Flores led off with a triple, and Won-Bin Cho doubled him home to cut the deficit to 4-2. Later, in the seventh, the Chiefs loaded the bases with nobody out and had a chance to make it a different game.They got one run on a Cho walk that scored Christian Martin.Then the inning stalled.Anyelo Encarnación flied out to end the threat, leaving the bases loaded and Peoria still behind 5-3.That was the inning the Chiefs needed.They did not get enough out of it.Leonel Sequera started for Peoria and gave the Chiefs five innings. He allowed four runs on six hits, walked two and struck out six. The strikeouts were there, but Dayton’s early power put Peoria in chase mode.The Dragons added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth, and Peoria could not answer.The Chiefs left 10 men on base and went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position. That is the story of the game.There were chances.There were not enough finishes.Palm Beach Cardinals Record: 33-33, Florida State League East Standings: 2nd place, Florida State League East Result: Suspended at JupiterPalm Beach did not complete its Friday night game against Jupiter.The Cardinals’ game against the Hammerheads was suspended and is scheduled to be made up Saturday as part of the weekend schedule at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.For the Cardinals, it pauses a series that has already had plenty of action. The Cardinal Chronicle St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurJJ Wetherholt Has Turned Rookie of the Year Buzz Into a Real RaceThe first time MLB.com released its 2026 Rookie of the Year poll, JJ Wetherholt was already part of the National League conversation.Now he is more than part of it.He is standing in the middle of it.In MLB.com’s first Rookie of the Year poll of the season, published May 12, Mets right-hander Nolan McLean was the clear early favorite in the National League, receiving 23 first-place votes. Reds slugger Sal Stewart followed with six first-place votes, while Wetherholt checked in third with five.That was not an insult. It was recognition.At the time, McLean had the look of the early front-runner. Stewart was producing power in the middle of Cincinnati’s lineup. Wetherholt was already building a case of his own, but the national attention had not fully caught up to the total value he was bringing to the Cardinals.That has changed.By MLB.com’s second Rookie of the Year poll, published June 9, Wetherholt had moved to the top of the National League list. The poll was conducted by a panel of 32 MLB.com experts, with voters ranking their top five choices in each league on a 5-4-3-2-1 scale.Wetherholt finished first in the National League voting with 120 total points and 13 first-place votes. Stewart finished second with 112 points and eight first-place votes. McLean, who led the first poll, dropped to third with 94 points and six first-place votes.That movement tells the story.Wetherholt has not built his case on one tool, one hot week or one eye-catching statistic. He has built it by becoming one of the most complete rookies in baseball.Entering the off day, Wetherholt is hitting .262 with 10 home runs, 31 RBIs, eight stolen bases and a .767 OPS. His .365 on-base percentage ranks among the better marks in the National League, and his 46 runs scored speak to the role he has played setting the table for a Cardinals lineup that has asked a lot from its young players this season.The offensive numbers matter, but they do not tell the whole story.Wetherholt’s value is not limited to the batter’s box. He opened the season as one of the organization’s most important young players. Now, after two-plus months of regular playing time, he has turned that expectation into production.The Cardinals have had plenty of rookies arrive with promise. What makes Wetherholt different is how quickly he has looked like a complete major league player.That does not mean he is a finished product. Far from it. Like every young hitter, he will go through stretches where the league adjusts. Pitchers will continue to test him. The grind of a full major league season will test him physically and mentally.But the foundation is already there.The plate discipline is real. The athleticism is real. The defense is real. The competitiveness is real.For the Cardinals, Wetherholt’s Rookie of the Year push is bigger than an individual award. It is a sign of where the organization wants to go. JJ Wetherholt Has Turned Rookie of the Year Buzz Into a Real Race

The Cardinal Chronicle Royals Pound Cardinals in 14-6 Series-Opening Loss Kansas City, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals had enough offense Thursday night to stay in a ballgame.They did not have nearly enough pitching.Kansas City hammered Cardinals arms for 17 hits and three home runs, turning the opener of the I-70 series into a 14-6 loss for St. Louis at Kauffman Stadium. The Cardinals scored early, collected 13 hits, and had several offensive bright spots, but none of it mattered much once the Royals’ lineup started stacking hard contact.This was one of those nights where the score tells the truth.The Cardinals jumped in front in the first inning, giving Matthew Liberatore a 2-0 lead before he ever took the mound. JJ Wetherholt opened another strong night by getting aboard, Ivan Herrera reached, and Jordan Walker brought home the first run on a fielder’s choice. Alec Burleson followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Herrera and giving St. Louis an early two-run cushion.That should have been a good start.It did not last.Bobby Witt Jr. answered immediately with a solo home run to left-center in the bottom of the first, cutting the lead to 2-1 and setting the tone for a long night of damage from Kansas City’s lineup.The second inning was where the game got away.The Royals sent traffic all over the bases and put six runs on the board. Carter Jensen doubled home Salvador Perez to tie the game. Isaac Collins followed with a double to score Jensen. Michael Massey reached on an error by Nelson Velázquez in left field, allowing Collins to score. Lane Thomas doubled home Massey. Witt singled home Thomas. Starling Marte then doubled home Witt.By the time the inning ended, the Cardinals’ 2-0 lead had become a 7-2 deficit.Liberatore’s night ended after just 1 2/3 innings. He allowed seven runs, five earned, on seven hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out two, but Kansas City squared him up repeatedly. It was not a command disaster. It was a contact disaster.That is a different kind of problem, and usually a louder one.The Cardinals tried to chip away in the fourth. Blaze Jordan reached and eventually scored when Walker beat out an infield single, cutting the deficit to 7-3. But Kansas City answered again in the bottom half, and that response buried any realistic comeback attempt.Jac Caglianone launched a two-run home run to left-center off Gordon Graceffo, stretching the lead to 9-3. Later in the inning, Nick Loftin doubled home Jensen and Marte, pushing the Royals’ lead to 11-3.At that point, the game had moved beyond uncomfortable.The Cardinals kept taking their at-bats, and to their credit, they did not completely disappear. Masyn Winn had a three-hit night and scored twice. Wetherholt continued to look like a table-setter with real impact, finishing with three hits and two walks. Walker had two hits, a walk and an RBI. Jordan added two hits and scored twice. José Fermín drove in two runs.There were offensive pieces worth saving from the wreckage.Wetherholt doubled. Winn doubled. Jordan doubled. Velázquez doubled. The Cardinals had 13 hits, drew six walks, and scored in four different innings.But they also left 15 runners on base.That is the kind of number that looks ugly in any game. In a game where the pitching staff gives up 14 runs, it becomes almost irrelevant, but it still tells part of the story. St. Louis had chances to make the game more competitive and could not land enough big swings.The Cardinals scored once in the fifth when Fermín singled home Winn, making it 11-4. Kansas City answered in the sixth when Perez homered to left off Max Rajcic, pushing the lead back to eight.St. Louis scored twice more in the seventh. Fermín grounded out to bring in Winn, and Pedro Pagés lifted a sacrifice fly to score Jordan. That made it 12-6, but again, the Royals had an answer. Thomas singled home Collins in the bottom half, and Kansas City added another run in the eighth on a passed ball.The final margin was 14-6.It was that kind of night.Kansas City’s lineup got production everywhere. Thomas drove in two runs. Witt homered, singled and drove in two before leaving the game. Caglianone homered and drove in two. Marte had three hits. Perez had three hits, including a home run and a double. Jensen had two hits. Loftin doubled twice and drove in two. Collins added two hits and two runs.That is not one hitter beating you.That is a lineup taking turns.The Cardinals’ pitching line was rough from start to finish. Liberatore allowed seven runs, five earned, in 1 2/3 innings. Graceffo followed and allowed four runs in 1 2/3 innings. Rajcic gave up one run over two innings. Justin Bruihl covered the final 2 2/3 innings and allowed two runs, one earned.No one really stopped the bleeding.The loss dropped St. Louis to 40-33, while Kansas City improved to 31-45. For the Cardinals, it marked a second straight loss after Wednesday’s series finale against San Diego. More importantly, it was a reminder that the rotation depth and middle relief questions are not going away just because the club has spent much of June playing good baseball.Good teams still have bad nights.This was a bad night.Burleson’s long hitting streak also came to an end, though he still drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. That should not take away from the run he has been on, but it was another small sign that Thursday did not belong to St. Louis.The Cardinals can point to the offense and say they competed. That is fair. Thirteen hits and six runs usually give a club a chance.But this game was decided on the mound.When the starter lasts fewer than two innings and the opponent scores 11 runs by the fourth, the rest of the night becomes damage control. The Cardinals never found enough of it.The good news is simple. It counts as one loss.The bad news is just as simple. It looked like more than one.The Cardinals will need to turn the page quickly as the series continues in Kansas City. Nights like this happen over 162 games, but the teams that survive them are the ones that do not let one ugly pitching night become a trend. St. Louis jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Kansas City answered with one run in the bottom half and then broke the game open with six runs in the second.Now the Cardinals turn to right-hander Michael McGreevy on Friday night, hoping he can do what he has done often this season: steady the rotation, work efficiently, and give the club a chance to win.First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. CT at Kauffman Stadium.
