THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Cardinals Rally Late, Fall to Giants 5-4 in 11 Innings St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals kept fighting Monday night in San Francisco. They just could not finish it.After trailing most of the night, the Cardinals tied the game in the ninth, took the lead in the 10th, lost it in the bottom half and finally fell to the San Francisco Giants, 5-4, in 11 innings at Oracle Park.Shay Whitcomb ended it with an infield single to shortstop, scoring automatic runner Nate Furman from third base in the bottom of the 11th.That was the final blow in a game filled with missed chances. The Cardinals had the tying run at third in the 11th and could not score. The Giants had the same situation in the bottom half and did. That was the difference.St. Louis entered the night at 72-72 after taking two of three in Colorado and winning five of six overall on the road trip. The Cardinals had spent the last week doing just enough to keep September alive. They took two of three from the Dodgers in Los Angeles. They took two of three from the Rockies at Coors Field. They opened another series against a last-place Giants club with a chance to finally push above .500 and keep pressure on the Wild Card race.Instead, they walked away with another one-run loss. The Cardinals are back below .500 at 72-73.And this one had several chances to be something better.San Francisco struck first in the bottom of the opening inning against Michael McGreevy. Turner Hill reached, and Rafael Devers drove him in with a double, giving the Giants a 1-0 lead. That was the beginning of a steady night from Devers, who continued to be one of the most dangerous bats in San Francisco’s lineup. He doubled twice, walked and scored twice. The Giants added another run in the third, helped by a Cardinals mistake. Christian Koss reached on an infield single and moved to second on a throwing error by McGreevy. Hill grounded out to move him to third, Devers walked, and Bryce Eldridge lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Koss and pushing San Francisco’s lead to 2-0.That run was unearned. It still counted. The Cardinals, meanwhile, struggled early against Logan Webb.Webb gave San Francisco six strong innings, allowing one run on three hits. He walked two and struck out eight. For most of his night, he kept St. Louis from creating the kind of inning it needed to take control. The Cardinals had very little through five innings.Thomas Saggese singled in the fifth, but the inning went nowhere. Webb kept the Cardinals chasing the count and missing opportunities, and the Giants carried a 2-0 lead into the fifth.San Francisco stretched it to 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth.Devers doubled to right, and Eldridge followed with a double to deep right-center, scoring Devers. It was Eldridge’s second RBI of the night and another run that made the Cardinals’ climb steeper.McGreevy was not hit hard all night, but San Francisco made its scoring chances count. That mattered. The Cardinals finally broke through in the sixth.Alec Burleson gave St. Louis its first run with a solo home run to right field, his 22nd homer of the season. The swing cut the deficit to 3-1 and gave the Cardinals their first real jolt of the night.Burleson continues to do what has mattered most for this offense. He drives in runs.He now has 104 RBIs on the season, and in a lineup filled with young players trying to prove themselves, Burleson remains one of the more dependable run producers. The Cardinals added another run in the seventh.Nolan Gorman walked to open the inning. Joshua Báez struck out, and Saggese also struck out, with Gorman moving to second on a passed ball. Nathan Church then doubled to shallow right, scoring Gorman and cutting San Francisco’s lead to 3-2.That was a big two-out swing.Church has had his ups and downs, but he came through in a spot where the Cardinals badly needed to close the gap. Suddenly, a game that had felt controlled by Webb and the Giants was back within reach.McGreevy kept the Cardinals close enough to make that possible. He worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits. He walked two and struck out four. He threw 105 pitches and gave St. Louis a start that should have been good enough to keep the game winnable. It was not perfect. It was competitive. The throwing error in the third hurt. The Devers-Eldridge combination hurt. But McGreevy did not let the game get away, and after the Cardinals had battled back within a run, Justin Bruihl came in and did his job.Bruihl gave the Cardinals 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out one. That bridge work mattered because it gave the offense time to make one more push. That push came in the ninth.Báez started the inning with an infield single to shortstop. Saggese followed with an infield single to second, putting two runners aboard. Church tried to bunt but popped it up to third, leaving the Cardinals with one out.Bryan Torres then worked a walk to load the bases.José Fermín came off the bench to hit for Pedro Pagés and delivered a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Báez and tying the game, 3-3.That was not a loud swing. It was the right at-bat.With the tying run at third and the season’s margin getting thinner by the day, Fermín got the ball to the outfield and gave the Cardinals another chance. They had tied the game. They had life. They also had a chance to do more.Burleson came up with two runners still aboard and struck out to end the inning. The Cardinals had erased the deficit, but they did not take the lead. That missed chance carried weight once the game moved into extras.Ryne Stanek had to work through trouble in the bottom of the ninth.Jung Hoo Lee singled. Whitcomb singled. Koss walked to load the bases. With two outs, Hill came to the plate with a chance to win it for San Francisco.Stanek got him to fly out to right. That sent the game to the 10th.The Cardinals took advantage first. With Burleson placed at second as the automatic runner, Jordan Walker grounded out to second, moving him to third. Leo Bernal followed with a single to shallow right-center, scoring Burleson and giving St. Louis its first lead of the night, 4-3.Bernal keeps finding moments.Since arriving in the majors, the rookie catcher has already delivered his first big-league hit, his first homer and now a go-ahead RBI in extra innings. For a player known first for his defense, these early offensive contributions have mattered. This was another one.But the Cardinals could not add on.Gorman flied out. Báez flied out. The lead remained one.Against extra-inning rules, that is always thin. The Giants answered immediately. With Turner Hill placed at second, the Cardinals intentionally walked Devers. Eldridge then singled to center, scoring Hill and tying the game, 4-4. Jonah Cox followed with a sacrifice bunt, moving Devers to third and Eldridge to second. Jung Hoo Lee was intentionally walked, loading the bases with one out.San Francisco had the winning run 90 feet away. The Cardinals found a way out.Drew Gilbert grounded into a catcher-to-first double play, with Devers out at the plate. It was the kind of escape that should have given St. Louis a second chance to steal the game. The Cardinals did get that chance. They did not take it.In the top of the 11th, Báez began the inning at second. Saggese flied out to deep center, moving Báez to third with one out. That put the go-ahead run 90 feet away.Church grounded out to the catcher.César Prieto walked as a pinch-hitter for Riley O’Brien and stole second, putting two runners in scoring position. Fermín then grounded out to shortstop, ending the inning. That was the game sitting there.A fly ball might have been enough.A ball through the infield might have been enough. The Cardinals got neither. The Giants did not miss their chance in the bottom half.Furman began the inning at second. Drew Cavanaugh moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt. Whitcomb then reached on an infield single to shortstop, and Furman scored the winning run.San Francisco won, 5-4.For the Cardinals, the frustration is obvious. They trailed 3-0 and came back. They tied the game in the ninth. They took the lead in the 10th. They escaped a bases-loaded threat in the bottom of the 10th. They had the go-ahead run at third with one out in the 11th.They still lost. That is a hard one to carry. The Cardinals finished with four runs on nine hits and committed one error. The Giants had five runs on 10 hits and did not commit an error. San Francisco’s biggest advantage came in the moments when the ball had to be put in play.Eldridge drove in three runs.Devers kept creating traffic.Whitcomb delivered the final swing. For St. Louis, Burleson homered and drove in a run. Church doubled and drove in a run. Fermín tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Bernal put the Cardinals ahead in the 10th. Saggese had two hits. Báez scored twice. Walker moved Burleson over in the 10th.There were useful moments. There was not a complete finish. That is where this loss sits. The Cardinals have been playing better baseball. The road trip has shown that. They went into Los Angeles and took a series from the Dodgers. They went to Colorado and took a series from the Rockies. They are getting real contributions from young players. Bernal, Báez, Saggese, Church and others have given September some life. But the standings do not reward almost. They reward wins.Monday night was a chance to start this series the right way against a Giants club well out of contention. It was a chance to climb above .500 again. It was a chance to take advantage of the softer part of the schedule before the final push.Instead, the Cardinals dropped another one-run game. That is the part that has followed this team all season.Good enough to hang around. Not always good enough to finish.McGreevy gave them a chance. The bullpen kept them alive. The offense found a way back. Bernal put them ahead. Then the game slipped away in extras. The Cardinals still have two more games in San Francisco, and they still have a chance to win the series. But after fighting all the way back Monday night, this opener felt like one they had done enough to steal. They did not.The Giants beat the Cardinals, 5-4, in 11 innings.St. Louis is back below .500.And the climb, once again, gets a little steeper. The Cardinal Chronicle Preserving the Past, Promoting the Present, and Projecting the Future.

Cards Rally Late, Fall to Giants 5-4 in 11

The Cardinal Chronicle Mathews Gets the Ball as Cardinals Try to Answer Giants in San Francisco St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe Cardinals had a chance to take control of the series opener Monday night.Instead, they left Oracle Park with another game that got away.St. Louis returns to San Francisco tonight for the second game of a three-game series against the Giants, trying to rebound from a 5-4, 11-inning loss that pushed the Cardinals back under .500 and farther away in the National League Wild Card race.First pitch is scheduled for 8:45 p.m. CT, with left-hander Quinn Mathews getting the ball for the Cardinals against Giants right-hander Landen Roupp. The Cardinals enter at 72-73, while the Giants come in at 60-85. San Francisco leads the series 1-0 after Monday’s extra-inning win, and St. Louis now sits five games behind Arizona for the final National League Wild Card spot with 17 games remaining. That makes the math uncomfortable. It also makes the assignment simple.Win tonight. The Cardinals rallied from a late deficit Monday, tied the game in the ninth on a José Fermín sacrifice fly and took a lead in the 10th when Leo Bernal drove in the automatic runner. But San Francisco answered in the bottom half, then won it in the 11th when Shay Whitcomb’s infield single brought home Nate Furman from third. It was not a blowout. It was not an empty effort. It was worse in some ways, because it was another winnable game that slipped through the cracks.Michael McGreevy gave the Cardinals a competitive start, working 6 2/3 innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits. Alec Burleson gave St. Louis its first run with his 22nd home run of the season, a solo shot into McCovey Cove in the sixth. Thomas Saggese had two more hits. Bernal came through in extra innings.Still, it was not enough. That has been too much of the story lately. The Cardinals have had fight. They have had rallies. They have had moments from young players. They have had enough offense at times to make games interesting. But September does not reward interesting. The Cardinals need wins, and they are running out of games to keep letting wins slip away. Now the ball goes to Mathews.Mathews enters at 1-2 with a 4.38 ERA, a 1.58 WHIP and 24 strikeouts. This will be his sixth major league start, and it comes in a spot where the Cardinals need more than development. They need innings. They need strikes. They need a start that gives the offense time to get into the game without asking the bullpen to cover too much too early. His last outing offered something to build on.Mathews allowed one run on four hits over five innings against the Dodgers last Thursday, pitching well in front of family and friends in Los Angeles. The Cardinals lost that game 3-2, and run support has been an issue in his starts. St. Louis has scored only 12 total runs in his five outings. That cannot continue tonight.Mathews has never faced the Giants, but the matchup brings an interesting angle. Left-handed hitters have batted just .211 against him, while right-handed hitters have had more success. San Francisco will test that, especially with Rafael Devers and Bryce Eldridge sitting in the middle of the order.Devers is the obvious danger. He doubled twice Monday night, walked twice, scored a run and drove in another. He now has 36 doubles and 35 home runs this season, and he has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball over the last week-plus. Eldridge also hurt the Cardinals in the opener, driving in three runs with a double, a single and a sacrifice fly. Those are the bats Mathews cannot let beat him with traffic on base.No leadoff walks. No free runners ahead of Devers. No mistakes in the middle of the plate to Eldridge. No innings extended by extra outs. The Giants may be buried in the standings, but they are not playing like a team willing to roll over. They have now taken the opener of a series the Cardinals needed badly, and with six meetings between these teams over a 10-day stretch, San Francisco has a real chance to make life miserable for St. Louis down the stretch. The Cardinals cannot allow that to happen. On the other side, Roupp enters at 8-13 with a 4.17 ERA, a 1.29 WHIP and 137 strikeouts. His record is not pretty, but the recent trend is better. San Francisco has won his last two starts, and he held Arizona and Pittsburgh to two runs over 10 innings in that span. The Cardinals cannot let him keep rolling.Roupp has faced St. Louis once before, and the Cardinals got to him for six runs on nine hits over 3 2/3 innings in 2024. That does not win tonight’s game, but it is a reminder that the Cardinals should not treat this matchup like survival. They need to attack. They need traffic early. They need Burleson, Jordan Walker, Iván Herrera, Joshua Báez, Nolan Gorman, Saggese, Bernal and the rest of the order to make Roupp work from the first inning. They need better at-bats with runners on base. They need pressure before the game reaches the late innings and turns into another coin flip.Herrera remains one of the most important bats in the lineup. Saggese continues to make the most of his opportunity. Burleson has been steady all season and homered Monday. Walker still gives the Cardinals the kind of middle-order power that changes how pitchers work. Báez can turn one mistake into instant damage. Bernal continues to make September interesting with his bat and defense behind the plate. There is enough here to win games. But enough on paper does not matter if the Cardinals keep waiting until the ninth inning to make their push. The bigger picture is unavoidable now.St. Louis is five games back with 17 to play. The Cardinals have lost 10 of their last 16. The schedule still gives them games against teams below .500, but Monday was the warning. A soft spot on the schedule only matters if a team takes advantage of it.The Giants are not going to hand the Cardinals anything. They proved that in the opener. Now St. Louis has to answer. Not with a speech. Not with another reminder that tomorrow still exists. With a win.The Cardinals need Mathews to give them a start. They need the offense to get to Roupp early enough to matter. They need to control Devers and Eldridge. They need the bullpen to finish if handed a lead. Most of all, they need to stop giving away games they cannot afford to lose.September is no longer about waiting for the young roster to grow up someday. It is about winning today.Game Info Matchup: St. Louis Cardinals at San Francisco Giants When: Tuesday, September 8, 2026 First Pitch: 8:45 p.m. CT / 6:45 p.m. PT Where: Oracle Park, San Francisco Probable Pitchers: LHP Quinn Mathews vs. RHP Landen Roupp Mathews: 1-2, 4.38 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, 24 SO Roupp: 8-13, 4.17 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 137 SO Records: Cardinals 72-73; Giants 60-85 Broadcast: NBCS BA / Cardinals.TV Presented by bet365The Cardinal Chronicle Preserving the Past, Promoting the Present, and Projecting the Future.

THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Hjerpe Wins MLB Debut as Cardinals Outslug Rockies, 10-8 St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurCooper Hjerpe’s first day in the major leagues came at Coors Field. That is not exactly easing into the job.The St. Louis Cardinals’ rookie left-hander made it look a lot easier than it should have been.Hjerpe made his major-league debut Sunday afternoon in Denver and delivered four perfect innings, striking out six without allowing a hit, a walk or a run. His work steadied a game that had already tilted toward chaos, helped the Cardinals climb out of a four-run hole and carried St. Louis to a 10-8 win over the Colorado Rockies. It was Hjerpe’s first MLB appearance. It was also his first MLB win. That is a pretty good first day at work. The Cardinals trailed 5-1 after three innings, then erupted for six runs in the fifth and added three more in the eighth. They finished with 10 runs on 15 hits, took the series from Colorado and climbed back to .500 at 72-72.But the story was Hjerpe. It had to be.The Cardinals have waited a long time to see the former first-round pick on a major-league mound. Injuries delayed the timeline. Tommy John surgery made the road longer. Rehab innings came first. Minor-league steps came next. Then came Sunday, with Hjerpe called on behind starter Kyle Leahy in one of the most difficult pitching environments in baseball. The Cardinals were down. The Rockies had momentum. The game was getting away.Hjerpe stopped it.He entered after Leahy had been hit hard early and Cade Winquest had finished the third. From there, Hjerpe gave the Cardinals exactly what they needed: calm innings, strikes and swing-and-miss.Four innings.Twelve batters. No baserunners.Six strikeouts. For a debut at Coors Field, that is more than a good line. That is a statement. The day did not begin smoothly for St. Louis.Colorado struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Jake McCarthy reached and scored when TJ Rumfield doubled to left, giving the Rockies a 1-0 lead. Mickey Moniak followed with a run-scoring single, and Colorado led 2-0 before the Cardinals had much chance to settle into the afternoon.St. Louis answered in the second.Alec Burleson singled, Leo Bernal walked and Joshua Báez singled to load the bases. Nathan Church followed with a single to center, scoring Burleson and cutting the deficit to 2-1.The Cardinals had traffic. They had a chance to do more. They did not. That missed chance mattered for a while, because Colorado added on in the third.Rumfield singled, Cole Carrigg singled, and Moniak delivered the big swing against Leahy, launching a three-run homer to right-center field. The Rockies led 5-1, and at Coors Field, that kind of deficit can feel bigger than the scoreboard says.Leahy’s day ended after 2 2/3 innings. He allowed five runs on six hits, struck out six and did not walk a batter, but the Rockies made their contact count. Moniak drove in four runs on the day, and his homer put the Cardinals in a spot where the game could have gotten ugly quickly. It did not.Winquest got the final out of the third. Then Hjerpe took over. The rookie did not pitch like a man trying to survive his debut. He pitched like someone trying to take control of it. He filled the strike zone, missed bats and gave the Cardinals time to let their offense go back to work. That is exactly what happened in the fifth.St. Louis opened the inning with the kind of pressure that can flip a game at Coors Field. José Fermín singled. Iván Herrera followed with a base hit. Burleson singled, loading the bases and bringing Bernal to the plate.Bernal, who has wasted no time making an impression since arriving in the big leagues, came through again. The rookie catcher lined a two-run single, scoring Fermín and Herrera and trimming Colorado’s lead to 5-3. Bernal has already delivered milestone swings since his call-up, including his first MLB hit and first MLB home run earlier in the week in Los Angeles. Sunday added another meaningful at-bat to a fast-growing list. The inning did not stop there.Joshua Báez followed with a ball that produced two more runs, tying the game at 5-5. Báez reached, pressure stayed on Colorado, and the Cardinals had erased the four-run deficit. Then Nolan Gorman supplied the loudest swing of the inning.Gorman drove a two-run homer to right-center field, giving St. Louis a 7-5 lead and completing the six-run burst. What had been a 5-1 deficit had become a two-run Cardinals lead in a matter of minutes. That is Coors Field. That is also why Hjerpe’s work mattered so much.A comeback only means something if the pitching gives it a chance to stand.Hjerpe did that. After the Cardinals took the lead, he kept mowing through the Rockies. He did not hand the momentum back. He did not pitch around trouble because there was no trouble. He simply kept putting the next hitter away. For a young pitcher making his debut, that is the impressive part.It was not just the scoreless line.It was the way the game changed once he entered. Before Hjerpe, the Rockies had five runs in three innings. After Hjerpe, Colorado went quiet for four full innings. The Cardinals turned that silence into a lead, then into a win. That is why Hjerpe earned it.The Cardinals added insurance in the eighth, and they needed every bit of it.Thomas Saggese singled, Fermín followed with another hit, and Herrera drove a two-run double to right-center field, scoring both runners and stretching the Cardinals’ lead to 9-5. Burleson followed with an RBI single, bringing Herrera home and pushing the advantage to 10-5.At the time, it looked like breathing room.At Coors Field, breathing room can disappear fast.Colorado got one run back in the bottom of the eighth when McCarthy homered, cutting the lead to 10-6. The Rockies added two more in the ninth and brought the tying run close enough to make the final inning uncomfortable. That is usually how games in Denver end.Nothing is easy until the last out is secure. The Cardinals got there, but not without stress.Ryne Stanek handled part of the ninth before George Soriano came on with the Rockies still threatening. Soriano finished it, and the Cardinals walked away with a 10-8 win that felt both exciting and exhausting. That is a fair description of the entire weekend.Friday night, Herrera rescued the Cardinals with a ninth-inning three-run homer in a 7-6 win. Saturday night, St. Louis built an early lead and lost it in a 10-7 defeat. Sunday, the Cardinals fell behind 5-1, then used a six-run fifth inning and Hjerpe’s debut brilliance to take the series. There was very little calm baseball in Colorado. There was, however, a series win. That matters. The Cardinals took two of three from the Rockies after taking two of three from the Dodgers in Los Angeles. They did not sweep either series, and both finales came with stress attached in very different ways. But a 4-2 stretch through Los Angeles and Colorado is still useful baseball for a club trying to keep September alive. The Cardinals are still chasing. They are still flawed. They are still living too close to the .500 line. But Sunday gave them something worth carrying forward.Hjerpe was the reason. The offense deserves plenty of credit. Herrera had three hits and drove in two. Burleson had three hits and an RBI. Bernal drove in two. Báez had two hits and was in the middle of the fifth-inning rally. Gorman hit the go-ahead two-run homer. Saggese had two hits and scored twice. Church drove in a run. Fermín came off the bench and helped ignite the offense. That is a full lineup contribution. The Cardinals needed it after falling behind by four. But the middle of the game belonged to Hjerpe.Four perfect innings in a major-league debut would stand out anywhere. Doing it at Coors Field, with the Cardinals trailing and the Rockies already rolling, makes it even more impressive. He did not just protect a lead. He helped create the conditions for the Cardinals to take one. That is the difference. There are debuts that feel ceremonial. This one mattered.Hjerpe entered with the Cardinals needing innings, needing stability and needing someone to stop the game from turning into another bullpen scramble. He gave them all of it. He struck out half the hitters he faced. He threw strikes. He kept Colorado off the bases. He walked off the mound with the Cardinals back in front and his first major-league win within reach. For a pitcher whose path to St. Louis has not been simple, that moment should not be brushed aside. The Cardinals have had several young players announce themselves in recent days. Bernal did it in Los Angeles. Saggese did it with his bat. Báez has continued to flash power and run production. Walker remains a central part of the lineup’s future.Sunday was Hjerpe’s turn. The Cardinals have spent much of this season trying to balance the present and the future. They are still trying to win enough games to keep the standings relevant, but they are also getting a look at players who could shape the next chapter of the club. That is what made Sunday important. It was not just another 10-8 Coors Field win.It was a look at a left-handed pitcher the Cardinals have been waiting on.And the first look was excellent.Hjerpe did not solve the rotation in one afternoon. No debut does that. He did not erase the concerns created by Leahy’s short start or the late runs allowed by the bullpen. The Cardinals still gave up eight runs. They still had to survive the ninth. They still made this harder than it needed to be after building a five-run lead. Those things are real.So is Hjerpe’s debut.Sometimes a game can be messy and meaningful at the same time.Sunday was both. The Cardinals won the series. They got back to .500. They scored 10 runs. They survived Coors Field. And most importantly, they watched Cooper Hjerpe walk into his first major-league game and pitch like he belonged. That is the story. The Cardinals beat the Rockies, 10-8.Hjerpe got the win.And on a wild afternoon in Denver, a rookie left-hander gave St. Louis a debut worth remembering. The Cardinal Chronicle Preserving the Past, Promoting the Present, and Projecting the Future.
