The offense was struggling to find traction, and Lakeland had control of the game. Peña helped change that. They needed length. They needed someone to keep Arkansas quiet long enough for the offense to find its footing.Cijntje delivered all of it.The Springfield right-hander turned in one of his best starts of the season Saturday night, throwing six shutout innings in the Cardinals’ 7-5 win over the Arkansas Travelers at Route 66 Stadium. He allowed just three hits, walked three and struck out nine, setting the tone before the game got a little too interesting late.This was a winning start in every sense.Springfield’s offense did not break through until the sixth inning, which made Cijntje’s work even more important. He held Arkansas off the board while the Cardinals searched for a way to solve the Travelers’ pitching staff. That is what quality starting pitching does. It keeps a club close until the bats wake up.And when the bats finally woke up, Springfield took advantage.The Cardinals scored four runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh, building a 7-0 lead before Arkansas made its late push. Cardinal Chronicle Morning Farm Report St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurCijntje Deals, Peña Drives In Four as Cardinals Affiliates Split the Fourth The St. Louis Cardinals’ full-season affiliates split the board on the Fourth of July, going 2-2 across the system.Memphis lost a late battle with Charlotte, 8-6, despite home runs from Bligh Madris and Ramon Mendoza and a three-hit night from Colton Ledbetter. Springfield beat Arkansas, 7-5, behind six shutout innings from Jurrangelo Cijntje and a three-RBI night from Jon Jon Gazdar. Peoria shut out Wisconsin, 2-0, with four pitchers combining to hold the Timber Rattlers to four hits. Palm Beach fell to Lakeland, 7-5, but Yordalin Peña gave the Cardinals the loudest offensive line of the night with a homer, double and four RBIs.It was not a perfect system-wide night, but there were some strong individual performances worth carrying forward.Memphis Redbirds Charlotte 8, Memphis 6 Memphis: 51-35 overallMemphis kept fighting, but Charlotte had the bigger middle-inning punch Saturday night at AutoZone Park.The Redbirds fell 8-6 to the Charlotte Knights after Charlotte jumped out with two runs in the first, added another in the fourth and broke the game open with four runs in the sixth. Memphis tried to climb back late, scoring two in the ninth, but the rally came up short.Colton Ledbetter was the table-setter for Memphis, going 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. Bligh Madris hit his 14th home run of the season and drove in his 52nd run, while Ramon Mendoza added his sixth homer of the year. Thomas Saggese drove in two runs, and Victor Scott II added an RBI.Mason Molina made his first Triple-A start and showed the swing-and-miss that has made him one of the more interesting arms in the system. Molina allowed three earned runs on six hits over four innings, walking three and striking out eight. The command and traffic were part of the story, but eight strikeouts in four innings is not something you ignore.Tink Hence followed with a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two. Not tidy, but good enough.Peoria Chiefs Peoria 2, Wisconsin 0 Peoria: 38-41 overallPeoria won the cleanest game in the system Saturday night.After a two-hour delay at Dozer Park, the Chiefs shut out the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 2-0, behind a strong start from Leonel Sequera and excellent bullpen work.Sequera gave Peoria six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out five. He faced 21 batters and kept Wisconsin from ever building a real threat. For a pitcher carrying a high ERA into the night, this was exactly the kind of outing that can start changing the direction of a season.The bullpen finished what Sequera started. José Davila worked a scoreless seventh, Christian Worley struck out all three batters he retired in the eighth, and Patrick Galle finished the ninth with two strikeouts. Together, the Peoria staff held Wisconsin to four hits and struck out 11.The Chiefs did not do much offensively, but they did enough.Ian Petrutz had the best night at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a stolen base. Cameron Nickens went 1-for-2 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored. Jalin Flores added his 16th double of the season, and Sammy Hernandez walked and stole his ninth base.This was not a slugfest. It was a pitching win, plain and simple.Old School Take: Sometimes two runs are plenty if the pitching staff brings its lunch pail. He had the kind of week that reminds everyone why the power has always been such a major part of his prospect profile.This weekly report is not designed to rewrite the prospect board every seven days. A hot week does not make a player a finished product, and a cold week does not erase the tools that put a player on the map. But performance still matters, and each week gives us another look at who is trending up, who is adjusting and who needs to turn the page.Here are three hitters and three pitchers trending up, followed by three hitters and three pitchers looking to bounce back.Who’s Hot — HittersJesús Báez, SS, Springfield CardinalsBáez was the clear offensive headliner this week.In four games for Double-A Springfield, Báez went 6-for-16 with six runs, one double, four home runs, eight RBIs and one walk. He hit .375 with a 1.599 OPS.That is big-boy damage.The four home runs jump off the page, but the eight RBIs and six runs scored show how much impact he had on the Springfield lineup. Báez has always had the kind of raw power that can change a game with one swing, and this week he did it repeatedly.There are still parts of the offensive profile that need polish, but when Báez is driving the baseball like this, the upside becomes hard to ignore.Ryan Weingartner, 3B, Palm Beach CardinalsWeingartner put together one of the best all-around offensive weeks in the system.In four games for Low-A Palm Beach, he went 6-for-13 with six runs, two home runs, five RBIs, three walks and four stolen bases. He hit .462 with a 1.486 OPS.That is a full box score.Weingartner hit for average, hit for power, reached base, scored runs and created pressure with his legs. The four stolen bases are especially notable because they show he was not just waiting around for someone else to drive him in.When a player produces in that many different ways over a four-game stretch, he earns a spot on the hot list.Won-Bin Cho, CF, Springfield CardinalsCho earns the third spot after a strong power week at Double-A.In four games for Springfield, Cho went 6-for-17 with five runs, three home runs, five RBIs and one walk. He hit .353 with a 1.271 OPS.Cho has long had the athletic frame and tools to be interesting, but weeks like this matter because they show impact. Three home runs in four games at Double-A is not background noise. That is production against advanced pitching.The power has not always been the loudest part of Cho’s profile, but when it shows up like this, the offensive ceiling looks a lot more interesting.Also worth noting: Tre Richardson III had only three hits, but two of them left the yard, and he added seven RBIs and four stolen bases. José Suárez went 12-for-24 with four doubles and a .500 average at High-A. Cade McGee also had a strong week, hitting .417 with two home runs and a 1.450 OPS.Who’s Hot — PitchersMason Molina, RHP, Memphis RedbirdsMolina delivered the best upper-level pitching performance of the week.In 6.2 scoreless innings for Triple-A Memphis, he allowed five hits, walked two and struck out six. He finished with a 0.00 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP.That is a strong response at a difficult level.Triple-A lineups can punish mistakes quickly, but Molina kept the game under control. The six strikeouts were solid, but the most important part was the zero in the earned-run column. He worked deep, limited damage and gave Memphis exactly what it needed.For a pitcher trying to stay in the larger organizational conversation, outings like this matter.Bruce Zimmermann, LHP, Memphis RedbirdsZimmermann continues to be one of the more useful depth arms in the system.In six scoreless innings for Memphis, he allowed four hits, walked one and struck out six. He finished with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP.That is clean work from a veteran left-hander.Zimmermann may not be viewed the same way as a younger prospect, but performance at Triple-A still counts. He threw strikes, avoided big innings and gave the Redbirds a quality start. Over the course of a long season, that kind of stability has value.Depth does not always get the headlines, but clubs never stop needing it.Jack Martinez, RHP, Palm Beach CardinalsMartinez earns a spot after missing bats and controlling traffic.In six innings for Low-A Palm Beach, Martinez allowed four hits, two earned runs and one walk while striking out nine. He posted a 3.00 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP.The ERA was not spotless, but the rest of the line was strong. Nine strikeouts against one walk is the kind of ratio that gets attention.Martinez did not dominate the scoreboard the way Molina and Zimmermann did, but he attacked hitters, limited baserunners and showed swing-and-miss ability. That is a good week.Also worth noting: Quinn Mathews allowed just one hit and struck out seven over 5.1 innings for Memphis, though four walks and one home run kept him just outside the top three. Scott Blewett was sharp in relief, throwing 3.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts and no walks.Who’s Cold — HittersCameron Nickens, LF, Peoria ChiefsNickens had the toughest offensive week on the board.In three games for High-A Peoria, he went 1-for-11 with one run, one RBI, no walks and four strikeouts. He hit .091 with a .182 OPS.That is a hard week to dress up.The lack of walks and extra-base damage made it difficult to create any offensive value. When a hitter is not reaching base and not driving the ball, the week gets cold in a hurry.Nickens has enough ability to bounce back, but this was a week to flush.Matt Koperniak, LF, Memphis RedbirdsKoperniak also lands on the cold side after a quiet Triple-A stretch.In three games for Memphis, he went 1-for-10 with no runs, no RBIs, no walks and one strikeout. He hit .100 with a .200 OPS.The strikeout number was not the problem. The issue was the lack of impact. There were not enough hits, not enough baserunners and not enough damage.Koperniak has been around long enough to understand how quickly a week can turn. This one simply did not go his way.Sebastian Dos Santos, SS, Palm Beach CardinalsDos Santos had a rough week after being one of the hotter Low-A bats in previous reports.In four games for Palm Beach, he went 1-for-15 with two runs, one RBI, three walks and six strikeouts. He hit .067 with a .289 OPS.The three walks helped keep the week from being completely empty, but the contact issues were hard to ignore. Six strikeouts in 15 at-bats is the number that stands out.For a young hitter, this is part of the grind. Pitchers adjust, and then hitters have to answer back.Also worth noting: César Prieto went 1-for-10 at Triple-A with a .282 OPS, while Jalin Flores struck out 10 times in 20 at-bats at High-A. Luis Pino also had a quiet week despite drawing three walks.Who’s Cold — PitchersBlake Aita, RHP, Peoria ChiefsAita had the roughest pitching line of the week.In 3.2 innings for High-A Peoria, he allowed eight hits, five earned runs, two walks and two home runs while striking out five. He finished with a 12.27 ERA and a 2.73 WHIP.The strikeouts were there, but so was the damage.Eight hits and two home runs in less than four innings is a tough combination to survive. Aita still showed some swing-and-miss, but too many pitches found too much barrel.This was not a lack-of-stuff problem. It was a command-and-execution problem.Domenic Picone, RHP, Springfield CardinalsPicone also had a difficult week at Double-A.In three innings for Springfield, he allowed six hits, four earned runs and one walk while striking out five. He finished with a 12.00 ERA and a 2.33 WHIP.The five strikeouts are worth noting, but the traffic and run prevention put him on the cold side.At Double-A, hitters are too good to let rallies build. Picone missed bats, but he also gave up too many hits in too short of a window. That is how a line can get away quickly.Nathan Shinn, RHP, Palm Beach CardinalsShinn’s week was undone by free passes.In 3.1 innings for Palm Beach, he allowed six hits, four earned runs and five walks while striking out two. He posted a 10.80 ERA and a 3.30 WHIP.The five walks are the number that matters most.Hits happen. Even good pitchers give those up. But when hits and walks stack together, innings get long and damage follows. Shinn needs to get back to strike one and make hitters earn their way on base.Also worth noting: Pete Hansen allowed four earned runs in four innings for Memphis, while Yhoiker Fajardo gave up four earned runs and two home runs in 4.1 innings at High-A. Jack Findlay had an unusual line, allowing no hits but still giving up four runs, three earned, after walking four.Old School TakeThis week belonged to the bats at Springfield and Palm Beach.Jesús Báez put together the loudest week in the system, and four home runs in four games at Double-A will get attention. Ryan Weingartner showed a little bit of everything at Palm Beach, while Won-Bin Cho added a power surge of his own at Springfield.On the mound, Molina and Zimmermann gave Memphis two strong upper-level starts, and Martinez showed swing-and-miss ability at Low-A.The cold side was a reminder that the minor leagues do not move in a straight line. Some players are building momentum. Some are adjusting. Some are learning that last week’s success does not cash this week’s check.That is baseball.The box score is not the whole story, but it is still part of the story.Performance still gets a vote at the Cardinal Chronicle.

Armchair GM: Ranking the Cardinals’ Trading ChipsThe Cardinal Chronicle St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals are in one of the more complicated positions a club can occupy at the trade deadline.They are not buried. They are not rebuilding in the traditional white-flag sense. They are not so far away that everything with value must go. But they are also not a finished product, and pretending they are would be poor roster management.That is the balance Chaim Bloom must strike.The Cardinals have played well enough to remain in the National League Wild Card picture, but the long-term plan has not changed. This organization is still building toward a stronger, younger, more sustainable roster in 2027 and 2028. That means the deadline should not be treated as a clearance sale, but it also cannot become an emotional exercise in clinging to every useful veteran simply because the standings are respectable.This is where discipline matters.The Cardinals should be willing to sell. They should not be willing to panic. They should listen on almost everybody. They should not touch the true foundation pieces. There is a difference between trading from a position of strength and tearing boards off the side of the barn.Here is how the Cardinals’ trading chips should be ranked.Tier 1: The Must-Sell Expiring ChipsDustin May, RHPIf the Cardinals are serious about maximizing value, Dustin May sits at the top of the list.May was brought in on a short-term deal, and that is exactly the kind of player a deadline seller — or even a soft seller — has to be honest about. He has restored value, given the Cardinals quality innings and reminded the league why his arm has always carried real intrigue.That also makes him exactly the kind of pitcher contenders will chase.Starting pitching is always expensive in July. It becomes even more expensive when multiple postseason clubs are trying to patch thin rotations at the same time. If May is pitching well, the Cardinals cannot afford to treat him like a long-term fixture unless they are prepared to extend him. Otherwise, the smarter play is to move him while the market is hot.This is not about punting the season. This is about understanding asset management.A strong Dustin May has value. An expiring Dustin May has risk. A traded Dustin May could bring back the kind of young pitching or upper-level prospect depth this organization still needs.Verdict: Sell, unless the return is insulting.Ryne Stanek, RHPVeteran relievers on short-term deals are made for the trade deadline.Stanek fits the profile. He has experience, power stuff and the kind of bullpen résumé that will appeal to a contender looking for one more late-inning option. The Cardinals may value what he brings, but relievers without long-term control are precisely the type of arms a team in transition should be willing to flip.The bullpen market is always aggressive because contenders know October games are often decided from the sixth inning on. One trusted reliever can swing a series. That urgency creates opportunity for clubs willing to sell.Stanek should not be treated as a throwaway, but he also should not be protected. If another team is willing to pay for experience and velocity, the Cardinals should take the call and make the deal.Verdict: Sell.Tier 2: The Aggressive Sell-High CandidatesLars Nootbaar, OFThis is where the conversation gets uncomfortable.Lars Nootbaar is a good player. He gets on base, brings energy, plays with intelligence and has been one of the more recognizable faces of this era of Cardinals baseball. But good players can still be trade candidates when the timeline, roster fit and market value all point in the same direction.Nootbaar has value now. That matters.The Cardinals have younger outfield options pushing toward St. Louis, with Joshua Báez sitting as the most obvious name in the upper minors. At some point, the organization has to create opportunity for the next wave. Keeping Nootbaar only makes sense if the Cardinals see him as part of the next serious contender or believe the offers will fall short of his real value.This is not a player you dump. This is a player you shop carefully.The return has to hurt the other team. The Cardinals should be asking for impact pitching, preferably young and controllable. If the offer is light, keep him. He could help the next good Cardinals team, but he could also bring back a return that helps build that team faster.This is the exact kind of decision that separates smart front offices from reactionary ones.If a contender views Romero as a postseason weapon and offers a serious young starting pitcher or a package with real upside, the Cardinals should consider it. But if the market treats him like just another bullpen arm, St. Louis should walk away.Controlled relief help has value beyond one season. There is no reason to move Romero just to say you sold.Verdict: Available only for an overpay.Tier 3: Listen, But Hold Unless OverwhelmedRiley O’Brien, RHPRiley O’Brien is not a simple trade chip. He is a power arm with years of control, and that changes the entire discussion.If he were an expiring veteran, this would be easy. But he is not. He has shown the kind of late-inning ability every club spends years trying to find. Triple-digit velocity, ninth-inning presence and team control are not things a club should casually move.That said, every player has a price.If another team views O’Brien as a controllable closer and wants to pay like it, Bloom has to listen. But the Cardinals should not be shopping him in the same category as rental relievers. O’Brien is not just helping the current roster. He could still be helping the next good Cardinals team.The bullpen needs stability. The organization has spent too many years searching for dependable late-inning answers to give one away cheaply.Verdict: Hold, unless the return is too good to refuse.Nelson Velázquez, OF/DHNelson Velázquez is useful, but useful does not always mean essential.He brings power, depth and roster flexibility, but he is also the kind of player who can become part of a larger deal if another club values the bat. The Cardinals do not need to force a trade here, but they also should not cling too tightly.Velázquez makes sense as a secondary piece in a package. He can help a club looking for right-handed thump, and the Cardinals have enough outfield and designated hitter considerations that his role is not locked in long term.If he stays, fine. If he helps complete a deal for pitching, also fine.Verdict: Moveable in the right package.Alec Burleson, 1B/OFAlec Burleson belongs in a different category than the easy trade names.He is young enough, productive enough and affordable enough to remain part of the Cardinals’ immediate and long-term plans. His bat has value to St. Louis, and unless another team is willing to treat him like a core offensive piece in trade talks, there is no reason to move him.This is where the Cardinals must avoid getting too cute.Not every player with trade value should be traded. Burleson helps the current lineup, fits the age range better than the veterans, and gives the Cardinals a left-handed bat they would have to replace if they moved him.The Cardinals can listen. They should not lead with his name.Verdict: Hold, unless another team overpays.Tier 4: The Must-Hold CornerstonesJJ Wetherholt, INFJJ Wetherholt should not be available. Period.He represents exactly what the Cardinals are trying to build: athleticism, bat-to-ball skill, plate discipline, power growth and star-level upside. If the organization is serious about building a new core, Wetherholt is one of the anchors.There is no realistic deadline deal that should involve him.Verdict: Untouchable.Masyn Winn, SSMasyn Winn is the shortstop.That should settle the matter. He gives the Cardinals premium defense, athleticism, energy and long-term stability at one of the most important positions on the field. Teams spend years trying to find a shortstop they can build around.The Cardinals already have one.Verdict: Untouchable.Jordan Walker, OFJordan Walker remains a foundational piece because the ceiling is still too high to walk away from.Development is rarely a straight line. The Cardinals have learned that the hard way with several young players over the years. But Walker’s combination of size, power, athleticism and offensive upside still makes him part of the bigger picture.Trading him now would be selling the idea of what he can become before letting the story fully play out.Verdict: Hold.Iván Herrera, CIván Herrera has worked his way into the future of the organization.Catching is hard to find. Catchers who can hit are even harder to find. Herrera’s offensive ability gives the Cardinals a valuable piece at a premium position, and unless the organization believes the defensive gap is too much to overcome, he should remain part of the core.The Cardinals have depth behind the plate, but that should not be confused with a reason to trade Herrera casually.Verdict: Hold.Blaze Jordan, 3B/1BBlaze Jordan fits the kind of player Bloom should want to keep around.He brings power, youth and corner-infield upside. If he continues to establish himself, he gives the Cardinals another cost-controlled bat with the ability to grow with the rest of the young position-player group.He is not a player you move unless another club values him far more than the Cardinals do.Verdict: Hold.Michael McGreevy, RHPMichael McGreevy should be treated as part of the solution, not a trade sweetener.The Cardinals need cost-controlled starting pitching. They need innings. They need stability. McGreevy provides all three. Even if his ceiling is debated, his value to this roster is obvious because the organization cannot keep talking about building around young pitching while trading away young pitching.Unless a team is offering a clear upgrade with long-term control, McGreevy should stay.Verdict: Hold.The Bottom LineThe Cardinals should be sellers, but they should be selective sellers.That means shopping Dustin May. That means moving Ryne Stanek if the market is there. That means listening hard on Lars Nootbaar and JoJo Romero, but only acting if the return matches the value. That means keeping Riley O’Brien unless somebody gets reckless. That means holding Alec Burleson unless another club treats him as more than a spare part.Most importantly, it means protecting the real foundation.Wetherholt, Winn, Walker, Herrera, Blaze Jordan and McGreevy should not be treated as deadline currency. They are the reason this reset has a chance to work.The Cardinals do not have to choose between competing now and building for the future. They simply have to be honest about who fits, who does not, and who can bring back the next wave of pitching this organization badly needs.Good organizations do not sell out of fear.They sell with a purpose and a plan for the future. The Cardinal Chronicle Cardinals Hammer Cubs 17-1 in Wrigley Field Rout St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals did not just beat the Chicago Cubs on Friday afternoon.They emptied the toolbox on them.In the opener of a holiday weekend series at Wrigley Field, the Cardinals broke loose for 17 runs on 17 hits and rolled to a 17-1 win over the Cubs. It was the kind of offensive eruption St. Louis had been waiting for, especially after too many nights recently when the bats had gone cold, missed chances, or left strong pitching unsupported.There was nothing quiet about this one.The Cardinals scored in six straight innings, hit three home runs, drove in 16 runs, and turned a division road game into a one-sided statement. Nathan Church delivered the first big swing. Masyn Winn added the loudest one. Bryan Torres came off the bench and joined the party with a homer of his own.And while the offense will take most of the headlines, Andre Pallante made sure Chicago never had a real chance to answer.Pallante gave the Cardinals 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing five hits, walking one and striking out two. He threw 102 pitches, 61 for strikes, and kept the Cubs off the board while St. Louis kept adding on.That mattered.The Cardinals did not need Pallante to be perfect with a 17-run avalanche behind him, but they did need him to keep the game from getting sloppy early. He did exactly that. Chicago put runners aboard in the first inning, but Pallante escaped. The Cubs had scattered traffic again later, but he continued to work through it, lean on contact, and keep the ball on the ground.It was not flashy.It was effective.And on a day when the Cardinals’ offense finally exploded, Pallante gave the game structure.The first inning passed without a run, though St. Louis had a chance when JJ Wetherholt singled and moved up after a Chicago error. The Cardinals did not cash it in, but the missed opportunity did not linger long.The second inning opened the floodgates.José Fermín doubled, Blaze Jordan reached on an infield single, and Nathan Church stepped in with two aboard. Church battled through the at-bat, then drove a three-run home run to right field, giving St. Louis a 3-0 lead.That swing set the tone for the afternoon.Church has made a habit lately of delivering important swings, and this one came at a perfect time. The Cardinals were facing a Cubs team that came into the series hot, playing at home, and looking to keep building separation in the National League Central race. A quick three-run punch changed the feel of the game immediately.The Cardinals did not stop there.In the third, Iván Herrera scored on a Nelson Velázquez sacrifice fly. Walker moved to third on the play, and Masyn Winn followed with a single to right, scoring Walker and stretching the lead to 5-0. Fermín then doubled to deep center, bringing home Winn and making it 6-0.By then, the Cardinals had David Peterson on the ropes.In the fourth, they knocked him out of the game.Herrera reached again, Jordan Walker doubled, Velázquez walked, and Alec Burleson came through with a two-run single to right. That pushed the Cardinals’ lead to 8-0.Then Winn unloaded.The Cardinals shortstop launched a three-run home run to left-center field, his fourth homer of the season, and suddenly St. Louis led 11-0.That was the blow that turned a strong start into a runaway.Winn finished 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. He has had stretches this season where the offense has come and gone, but Friday was a reminder of how much damage he can do when the bat is part of the equation. His glove is already valuable. When he is driving in four runs at Wrigley Field, that changes the bottom half of the lineup entirely.The Cardinals added three more in the fifth.Blaze Jordan scored when Velázquez drew a bases-loaded walk. Burleson then singled to deep right, scoring Walker and Herrera, pushing the lead to 14-0.Burleson quietly had one of the most productive afternoons on the roster. He went 2-for-5 and drove in four runs. He did not homer. He did not need to. He simply kept cashing in chances, and in a game where the Cardinals finally stacked traffic inning after inning, that kind of production was exactly what they needed.Herrera added two more runs in the sixth with a single to center, scoring Church and Jordan. That made it 16-0 and gave Herrera a three-hit, two-RBI afternoon.Herrera reached base four times, scored three runs and continued to be one of the steady offensive pieces in the middle of the Cardinals’ lineup. On a day when almost everyone contributed, his fingerprints were still all over the win.Then came Torres in the seventh.Pinch-hitting for Winn, Torres drove a solo home run to right field, his fourth homer of the season, extending the lead to 17-0. At that point, the game had moved well beyond comfortable. It had become the kind of day that lets a club exhale, empty the bench a little, and enjoy a rare division blowout on the road.The final offensive line was hard to miss.St. Louis scored 17 runs on 17 hits. Herrera had three hits. Jordan had three hits and scored three runs. Burleson drove in four. Winn drove in four. Church homered and drove in three. Velázquez drove in two without recording a hit. Fermín doubled twice and drove in a run. Torres homered off the bench.That is not one player carrying the afternoon.That is a lineup rolling over.For a Cardinals club that had been grinding through too many quiet offensive nights, that was the most encouraging part. The production came from everywhere. The top of the order reached. The middle drove in runs. The bottom created traffic. The bench added on.That is how an offense is supposed to look when it is right.Chicago finally scored in the seventh when Pedro Ramírez tripled and Alex Bregman doubled him home. That was all the Cubs could get. Max Rajcic handled the final stretch after Pallante exited, allowing one run while striking out three.The Cubs finished with one run on seven hits.That mattered too.The Cardinals were not just hot at the plate. They kept a dangerous Chicago lineup from making any kind of push. Pete Crow-Armstrong had a hit. Bregman had two hits and the lone RBI. Michael Busch and Carson Kelly also had hits. But the Cubs never found the crooked inning, never turned the afternoon into a back-and-forth game, and never made the Cardinals sweat.That was a welcome change.This was the first game of a three-game weekend series, and the Cardinals could not have opened it much better. They came into Chicago after taking two of three in Atlanta, including an 11-5 comeback win Thursday night, and followed it with their most lopsided win of the season.That is a serious two-day offensive response.After scoring 11 against Atlanta on Thursday, the Cardinals put up 17 against Chicago on Friday. That is 28 runs in two games, and for a club that had spent much of the previous week trying to find consistent offense, that is more than a small development.It may not mean everything is fixed.Baseball does not work that way.But it does mean the Cardinals have found some thunder again.The bigger picture still matters. St. Louis needs pitching stability. The bullpen has been tested heavily. The lineup still has to prove it can carry this production forward and not simply have one wild weekend burst. But Friday was not a day for overcomplicating things.The Cardinals beat the Cubs by 16 runs at Wrigley Field.That will spend.This was a division game. This was a road game. This was a Cubs team that had been rolling. The Cardinals did not sneak out with a win. They took control early, kept piling on, and never let Chicago into the ballgame.Church started it.Winn broke it open.Burleson cashed in.Herrera kept the pressure on.Jordan kept reaching.Torres put one more ball into the seats.Pallante took care of the rest.For one afternoon in Chicago, the Cardinals looked like the club doing the hunting.And the Cubs looked like the ones waiting for it to end.
