First pitch is scheduled for 7:08 p.m. CT at Wrigley Field, with right-hander Kyle Leahy getting the ball for the Cardinals against Cubs left-hander Shota Imanaga.The Cardinals enter the night at 46-39, while the Cubs come in at 49-39. Chicago still sits ahead of St. Louis in the National League Central picture, but Friday’s result tightened the feel of the series in a hurry. The Knights put two runs on the board in the first inning, forcing Mathews and the Memphis Redbirds to play from behind almost immediately.That could have been the beginning of a long night.Instead, Mathews settled in.The Memphis left-hander worked six innings in the Redbirds’ 4-3, 11-inning win over Charlotte at AutoZone Park, allowing two earned runs on six hits while walking none and striking out seven. After the early damage, Mathews kept the game under control and gave Memphis exactly what it needed: length, strikes and a chance.That last part matters.Memphis did not have an explosive offensive night. The Redbirds finished with only five hits, and the game stayed tied from the first inning until extra innings. In that kind of game, a starter cannot let one rough inning become two. Mathews did not.He kept throwing strikes.Mathews threw 89 pitches, 64 for strikes, and the no-walk line stands out. When a pitcher gives up early runs but refuses to add free passes to the problem, he gives himself a chance to recover. That is what Mathews did. The 21-year-old switch-hitting catcher, playing first base Friday, went 1-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs, one run scored and a walk.In a game where offense was hard to find, Bernal provided the kind of swing that changes everything.Memphis and Charlotte traded runs early, with the Knights scoring twice in the top of the first and the Redbirds answering with two in the bottom half. From there, the game settled into a long, grinding stalemate. Springfield won a tight 2-1 game over Arkansas with solo home runs from Ryan Campos and Won-Bin Cho, plus dominant work from the bullpen. Peoria had 11 hits but fell 9-3 to Wisconsin, and Palm Beach let an early four-run lead slip away in a 7-4 loss at Lakeland.It was not the clean sweep from the night before, but Memphis and Springfield gave the system two strong wins, and there were plenty of individual performances worth carrying forward.Memphis Redbirds Memphis 4, Charlotte 3 — 11 innings Memphis: 51-34 overallMemphis had to work late Friday night, but the Redbirds found the swing they needed.The Redbirds beat the Charlotte Knights 4-3 in 11 innings at AutoZone Park, scoring twice in the bottom of the 11th to turn a one-run deficit into a walk-off win. Charlotte scored two runs in the first inning, Memphis answered with two in the bottom half, and the game stayed tied until both clubs scored in the 11th.Leo Bernal delivered the biggest blow for Memphis, going 1-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs, one run scored and a walk. His ninth homer of the season gave Memphis the decisive swing in a tight, low-offense game.The Redbirds only had five hits, but they made them count. Victor Scott II doubled, walked, stole a base and scored a run. Joshua Báez added his 16th double of the season. Noah Mendlinger also doubled, while Thomas Saggese singled and scored.Quinn Mathews gave Memphis a strong start, allowing two earned runs on six hits over six innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out seven, throwing 64 strikes on 89 pitches. One inning later, Ryan Campos gave the Cardinals the lead with his 10th homer of the year.That was all the offense Springfield needed.Campos led the Cardinals at the plate, going 2-for-3 with the go-ahead home run. Cho finished 1-for-3 with his solo shot, while Travis Honeyman added Springfield’s other hit. It was not a busy night for the lineup, as the Cardinals struck out 11 times and did not draw a walk, but the two home runs were enough.Liam Doyle started and battled through five innings, allowing one run on four hits and four walks while striking out four. He kept Springfield close and gave the bullpen a chance to take over.Edwin Núñez did exactly that.Núñez was outstanding, throwing three hitless innings with no walks and five strikeouts. Campos got the big swing, Cho got Springfield even, and Núñez turned the middle innings into a locked door.Peoria Chiefs Wisconsin 9, Peoria 3 Peoria: 37-41 overallPeoria had plenty of traffic Friday night. The problem was turning that traffic into runs.The Chiefs lost 9-3 to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Dozer Park despite collecting 11 hits. Peoria finished with four doubles and a home run, but the Chiefs struck out 13 times and left too much on the table.Wisconsin jumped ahead with two runs in the first inning, then broke the game open with four runs in the fifth. The Timber Rattlers added one in the sixth and two more in the seventh to build a 9-0 lead before Peoria finally answered late.Anyelo Encarnación was the top offensive performer for the Chiefs, going 2-for-4 with a double, a solo home run, two runs scored and an RBI. Christian Martin went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Jack Gurevitch added two hits, including a double. Josh Kross and Luis Pino also doubled.Tanner Franklin started for Peoria and allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits over four innings. He walked three and struck out three. Gerardo Salas followed with two innings, allowing three runs while striking out five. Jason Savacool gave up two unearned runs in the seventh, while Nolan Sparks and Jawilme Ramírez each worked scoreless innings and struck out two apiece.There were useful pieces in this one, but the game got away before Peoria’s offense finally broke through.Old School Take: Eleven hits should usually buy you more than three runs. Palm Beach scored all four of its runs in that frame and did not score again.Alex Birge and Trevor Haskins supplied the offense. Birge drove in two runs with a single, while Haskins hit his eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot that gave Palm Beach a 4-0 lead.The Cardinals also got doubles from Brayden Smith, Yordalin Peña and Chase Heath, but the offense went quiet after the second inning. Palm Beach finished with six hits, two walks and 10 strikeouts.Lakeland answered with one run in the second and three more in the third to tie the game. The score stayed 4-4 until the eighth, when the Flying Tigers scored three runs to take the lead for good.Payton Graham started for Palm Beach and allowed four runs on seven hits over three innings. Kaden Echeman was strong in relief, throwing three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out two. Bernal Walks Off Charlotte as Cardinals Affiliates Split Friday Night

The Cardinal Chronicle Cardinals Storm Back in Atlanta, Beat Braves 11-5 St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals opened Thursday night with a with the first sound of thunder.Then they had to survive a storm.After jumping ahead early, watching the game flip in the bottom of the first, and spending most of the night chasing Atlanta, the Cardinals finally broke through with a seven-run seventh inning and beat the Braves, 11-5, at Truist Park.It was a big road win. It was a series win. And after the way the game started on the mound, it was also one of the more impressive in-game recoveries the Cardinals have put together in a while.This one could have gotten ugly in a hurry.Instead, St. Louis turned it into one of its better wins of the season.Jordan Walker got the Cardinals started in the first inning. JJ Wetherholt reached, Iván Herrera got aboard, and Walker stepped in against Hurston Waldrep with a chance to make an early statement.He did exactly that.Walker launched a three-run homer to left-center field, his 19th of the season, giving the Cardinals a 3-0 lead before Dustin May ever took the mound.It was the kind of first-inning punch a road team wants in a rubber game. Quiet the crowd. Put pressure on the home starter. Make the other club play from behind.For a few minutes, it looked like the Cardinals had the game set up perfectly.Then May could not hold it.Atlanta loaded the bases immediately in the bottom of the first, and the inning unraveled quickly. Mauricio Dubón singled home the Braves’ first run. Dominic Smith followed with a three-run double, putting Atlanta in front 4-3. Mike Yastrzemski then lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3.May did not make it out of the inning.His night ended after just two-thirds of an inning, with five runs allowed on five hits and two walks. It was a rough outing, and there is no way around it. After being skipped in his last turn because of back tightness, May looked anything but sharp.The Cardinals had a 3-0 lead.Before the inning was over, they were trailing 5-3.That kind of turn can take the life out of a club, especially on the road against a first-place team. But the Cardinals did not fold.The bullpen saved the night.Justin Bruihl entered in the first inning with two runners on and two outs. He stopped the bleeding there, then gave the Cardinals 2 2/3 scoreless innings. That was not a minor contribution. That was the bridge that kept the game from getting completely away.Bruihl’s work changed the temperature.Ryan Fernandez followed and continued the job, keeping Atlanta quiet through the middle innings. Gordon Graceffo then entered in the sixth and kept the Braves stuck at five. By the time the Cardinals came to the plate in the seventh, the bullpen had done more than buy time.It had given the offense a chance to win the game.The Cardinals took it.Nathan Church opened the seventh inning with the swing that changed everything, driving a two-run home run to right field to tie the game at 5-5. St. Louis did not wait for one big swing and stop there. But without that bullpen reset, the Cardinals never get to the seventh inning close enough to make their comeback matter.The offense will get the headlines, and rightly so.The bullpen earned one too.The win gave St. Louis the series in Atlanta, taking two of three from the Braves at Truist Park. That matters. The Cardinals opened the series with a 5-3 win behind Matthew Liberatore and big swings from Nelson Velázquez and Church. That is not easy to do. They trailed by two after the first inning and still won by six. That is not ordinary. They beat a first-place club on the road in a rubber game after the Braves had every early advantage.That is a good win.There are still concerns. May’s outing cannot be brushed aside. The Cardinals need more stability from that rotation spot, especially with the schedule tightening and the trade deadline moving closer. A starter lasting two-thirds of an inning puts a heavy burden on any bullpen, and over a long season, that is dangerous living.But Thursday night was not the time to bury the club under the warning signs.The Cardinals answered the bell.The bullpen stabilized the game.The offense finally broke loose.Walker led the charge. Church delivered the tying blow. Wetherholt and Herrera kept the inning moving. The Cardinal Chronicle Cardinals Open Wrigley Series With Pallante on the Mound Against Cubs St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe Cardinals left Atlanta with the kind of win that can change the feel of a road trip.Now they head straight into Wrigley Field, where the margin for error does not get any wider.St. Louis opens a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Friday afternoon, beginning a Fourth of July weekend set between two National League Central clubs trying to strengthen their place in the race. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. CT at Wrigley Field, with right-hander Andre Pallante getting the ball for the Cardinals against Cubs left-hander David Peterson.The Cardinals enter the series at 45-39, while the Cubs come in at 49-38. That puts Chicago ahead of St. Louis in the division picture, making this more than another summer rivalry series. The Cardinals have played themselves into meaningful baseball, but now they need to start making up ground against the teams directly in front of them.That starts Friday.St. Louis arrives in Chicago after an 11-5 comeback win over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday night at Truist Park. The Cardinals trailed 5-3 before sending 11 batters to the plate in a seven-run seventh inning. Nathan Church tied the game with a two-run homer, and the Cardinals kept the line moving from there with run-producing at-bats from JJ Wetherholt, Iván Herrera, Jordan Walker, Lars Nootbaar and Masyn Winn.That is the kind of inning the Cardinals have needed more often.For a club that has spent stretches of the season trying to avoid offensive droughts, the seventh inning in Atlanta looked like a reminder of what this lineup can be when it refuses to settle for one swing. Traffic. Pressure. Contact. Damage. That is a winning formula, especially on the road.Walker also gave the Cardinals an early jolt with a three-run homer in the first inning, continuing to provide the middle-order power this club has leaned on throughout the season. Alec Burleson added a solo homer in the ninth, while Gordon Graceffo handled a scoreless sixth and picked up the win.The victory gave St. Louis three wins in its last four games and sent the Cardinals into Chicago with a little momentum.But there was also a concern.Dustin May left Thursday’s game after a ball deflected off his ankle, and while the Cardinals rallied to win anyway, his health will be something to monitor. The Cardinals already know the pitching staff is not deep enough to casually absorb rotation concerns. Every healthy inning matters.That is part of what makes Pallante’s start important Friday.Pallante enters at 9-5 with a 3.83 ERA and 68 strikeouts. He has been one of the more useful arms in the Cardinals’ rotation, but his last outing against Miami was not one he will want to frame and hang over the fireplace. The Marlins hit him hard, and St. Louis needs a sharper version of Pallante at Wrigley.His assignment is plain.Throw strikes. Get ground balls. Keep the ball in the yard. His numbers suggest the Cardinals should have opportunities, but St. Louis cannot treat this matchup like a gift. A left-hander at Wrigley can become a problem if hitters get impatient, chase early and allow him to settle into rhythm.The Cardinals need the same offensive approach they used in Thursday’s seventh inning.Make Peterson work. Get traffic on the bases. Use the whole field. Let the right-handed bats do damage when he makes mistakes. Do not let him cruise through the first three innings on quick outs.Walker will be a key bat again. So will Herrera, Winn, Blaze Jordan and the right-handed side of the order. Burleson remains one of the steadier bats on the roster, even against left-handed pitching, and Wetherholt continues to give the Cardinals a table-setter who can change the look of an inning.Church also enters the series with some momentum after homering twice in Atlanta. His bat has had quiet stretches, but when he provides power from the lower half of the lineup, the Cardinals become much harder to navigate. That matters in a series where the Cubs will be trying to keep Walker and the middle of the order from controlling the game.The Cubs have their own problems for Pallante to solve.Pete Crow-Armstrong gives Chicago athleticism and impact. The Cubs have enough left-handed and right-handed balance to keep a pitcher from relaxing, and Wrigley has a way of rewarding aggressive swings when the conditions cooperate. The Cardinals cannot afford extra outs, leadoff walks or lazy defensive innings.This series is also about tone.The Cardinals have spent much of the season proving they are contenders, even with flaws. The pitching remains the concern. The offense still has quiet nights. The bullpen can still make a close game feel like a late-night prayer request. But the standings are built on wins and losses, and St. Louis is still in the fight.Now comes the part where they have to prove it against the teams above them.Chicago is not just another opponent. The Cubs are ahead of the Cardinals in the division, playing at home, and trying to keep separation in the National League Central. If St. Louis wants to keep climbing, this is the kind of series that matters.A win Friday would do more than start the weekend right. It would give the Cardinals a road win at Wrigley, build off the Atlanta comeback and put pressure on the Cubs immediately.
